Emergency Key
My car was delivered with the emergency key in place in the glove box - the dealer didn't warn me about this.
I don't know if this is common or just a mistake by my dealer - anyway, top tip, remove the key (not the holder) otherwise your car is ready to drive away by anyone in the know that can get the doors or windows open. |

did they actually leave the plastic key in the emergency fob in the glovebox? if that is true, it's unbelievable!! they should have handed u 2 fob and 1 plastic key in the bag that came along with it. i would stay away from this dealer. at least they should have told u.

That key in your glovebox won't work without swapping the metal key in your real key which contains the car's security chip. You can't do anything with the key in the glovebox without it but look at it.

People please read the manual or at least provide the correct information. The holder in the the glove box requires the black plastic key to work. The black key should be kept on your person, I keep mine in my wallet incase you lose your regular fob so you have a method to open the doors and start the car. What would the point of an emergency key if you needed the original for it to work????

mapezul is correct...the plastic key is used to unlock the car and the plastic fob is used (in combination with the plastic key) to start the car...
Btw I still think the key is too bulky to keep in your wallet...

The emergency key is also a bit fragile, already broke it once. Put back together well with superglue though.
I wrapped the key in paper to give it a bit more structure. Unfortunately, it makes it thicker. Oh well, still a nice feature. |

That plastic key is too bulky for the wallet. I have my at home. If I lose mine I'll be calling roadside assistance. BTW I wish they could be able to unlock and start the car for you..maybe in the future

My plastic key fits fine in my wallet, it is not too bulky and I guess I am used to it since all of my cars lately have had one and I buy wallets that it fits nicely in! The funny thing about OnStar is if they would just design the locking system to not lock the drivers door while the key is inside the car, they would have less customer call volume... every German car I have owned all the way back to my beetle does not allow the driver to lock the keys in the car. The reason why GM/Chevy/Cadillac does not do this is simple..... keep the subscribers hooked on OnStar and that is a fact. My friend works for a dealer for the aforementioned brands and was telling me how many people buy the cars because of the stupid OnStar unlock feature and how the training books tell the salesmen to push the feature as a saver for when you lock the keys in, not if but when basically showing how americans are stupid and do this often. The training also recommends asking the person how many times they have locked them-self out of the car and explain how easy it would have been with OnStar to get back in...... sad. Personally I think carry an emergency key is a better idea, especially say when I hear that commercial on the radio when the baby locks the doors and the mom can't get in, they had to call OnStar; but what happens when OnStar is not able to get a signal, you break a window.... my little black key would have been great then!
