340i - Michelin PS4S ordered

I'm still running around on my winter wheels & tyres, but have finally got around to ordering some new tyres for my Summer 403M's. I was originally looking at non-RFT Goodyear F1's, but the front sizes seem to be very hit and miss when it comes to availability.

So I've ordered some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. Hoping to have them fitted next weekend and, ideally, will changeover onto them from my winters. I hear lots of good things about the PS4S tyre, so looking forward to seeing how it compares.

Oh, and I'll be putting my Bridgestone RFT's up for sale. There's still life in them, although I need to measure the tread depth to determine how much. Either way, I'll be putting them up for a cheap price.

What deal did you get on your Michelins?
Will need to do the same on my 340 in a few months, so will be interested in your feedback.

The MP4S is a great tyre with excellent grip, traction, and wear rate.

The only area where I've noticed that they are not as goof as the MPSS, which they replaced, is straight line tracking - they tend to tramline a little.

Let us know what you think once you've scrubbed them in.

Interesting, are you on 19s or 20s ? I’m on 20s and no tramlining to speak of and tracks straight.

I'm paying just under £730 for 4, including fitting.

However Michelin have an offer of £100 back if fitted before the beginning of April.

Sounds good, Grant hopefully will make a great car even better.

I never have got mine off the RFTs either, which will always feel like a missed opportunity I suspect.

I was sceptical at first with the claims of improved ride etc on the 19" MPS4s, but now realise the magic does work.

I had to get new rubber when I noticed only 2mm left on the OEM Sot's RFT rears when changing back from winters last week. Still had 5.5mm on the fronts to keep as spares, or when it goes back.

The price diff from suppliers for tyres is like getting insurance quotes, massive variations even within the same chain of shops. There was not any current Michelin offers at Costco, so settled with Formula 1 at Long Eaton at £660 fitted for 4.

After a week and over 400 miles, Wow - absolutely night and day compared to the RFT's so much more compliant and planted, even in the wet. Running at 38 rear, 36 front, with no flashing DSC on Rbt's now.

Edit, thanks to Grant_7 message above, claim in to Michelin as fitted 11/03/19 so another £100 back, so £560 all in, result.

19". On a perfectly flat surface the tracking is fine - the car runs straight.

However, on some surfaces I find that the front tyres hunt/tramline a little more than the MPSS. Not a major deal; just different.

Thanks for the heads-up about the offer.

My tyres are going to get mullered next week, so the offer will hopefully help ease the bill.

You can get the normal Michelin pilot sport 4 tyre. From the reviews I've read/watched on the tyres there was/is very little difference.

Here's a nice review comparing them and the cup 2:

Tried 18in PS4 non runflats on my previous 330d and was underwhelmed, I would say Goodyear eagle 19in rft are far superior

I’m sure you’ve dabbled with tyre pressures on your very modded chassis dynamics, what pressures have you found works best on the PS4’s?

If that's the case I guess the only option is to continue to use the pilot super sports on 18, of course they seem to be more expensive than their replacement. Assuming one sticks with Michelin that is.
Out of interest, what was underwhelming about them? Just generally or any specific failings?

I've found them to be very sensitive to pressures, mainly in terms of ride rather than handling.

I run 2.5Bar all round. 235/40/19 96Y fronts; 265/35/19 98Y rears.

Very different dynamics but for reference alpina recommend 3.4 bar normal and 3.2/ 3.1 comfort for b3s non run flat PS4s . I felt that seemed silly high and tried 2.5/2.6 ish and the car just didnt work, tried up to 3bar with no improvement.Settled on the comfort advice and find the ride and handling excellent for normal driving but the car does need the 3.4 for higher speed stability.

Excessive road noise and very soft side walls giving poor turn in. Dial in pressure to correct and they offer no benefit over a good rft. Ie . Goodyear rft

I can feel the ride getting a bit brittle even by increasing the pressures to 2.6, but the car has a pretty stiff suspension setup so I feel the changes a lot more.

No way I'll be increasing my pressures by up to another 0.8Bar/13psi - the tyres would be skipping all over the place in the corners. I'd also expect to get a lot more tyre wear - central band for the rears, and inner shoulders for the fronts (which are at -1.75º). With my current pressures tyre wear is even across the entire tread width.

I will be buying new tyres soon, also looking for the mps4s tyres. Are people generally buying the bmw approved ones on sites like black circles or just the normal tyres?
Also where can I find this £100 cash back offer?
Thank you

Michelin offer

https://www.rewardpromotions.co.uk/m...sk?countryId=1

I bought "normal" unstarred tyres and found phoning around locally to be cheaper than Black circles/Mr Tyre/Oponeo this time. Found the cheapest quote online then got locals to match. Even better after seeing what their initial price was, surprising how many will match and go an extra couple of quid.

I paid £660.37 locally for 4 (19") and was not aware of the Michelin offer until Grant_7 mentioned it, so thanks to him another £100 discount.
