Okay wtf bmw...

So last night I'm in downtown Houston for a little TX2K meet and as Im getting in my car to leave, my battery dies. No biggie, I get a jump from someone and head home. I'm 5 minutes away from my house when the car shits itself and goes into limp mode. I couldn't go faster than 10mph and while idling the car sounded cammed. Lol. I replaced the battery this morning and everything seems fine now. So i guess my question is what does the battery dying have to do with the engine cutting power?? Has this happened to anyone else?

Bad batteries causes these cars to run weird. There's so many computers in the car drawing power. So computer wasn't getting enough juice

Last summer our battery was apparently on the way out- original from 11/2012. You could start the car, but it wouldn't go into Drive. I used a starter pack on it to get it started & it went into Drive, but had set the yellow SES light. Drove it to the dealer the next morning for a diagnosis & new battery.

Similar thing happened to me.(besides the cammed part.) I had quite a few weird things happening that all went away after a battery change. Limp mode randomly, remote not detected, jerky 1st gear acceleration on cold start....all gone when I installed new battery.

When I had my 2001 E39 530i, this was a well known problem. If you ever had multiple unrelated weird car behaviors, it was almost guaranteed to be a battery that was about to give up the ghost. Computers running just below minimum required voltage levels do some crazy things.

I guess the question then is, why isn't the car throwing a warning asking to replace the battery if the voltage is so low as to affect functions? Bad sensor or bad design?

When you replace the battery, you need to code it into your car's computer. It's absolutely necessary. Make sure you get that done if you haven't already.

^Correct. I'm in NW Houston if you need someone to register your battery.

I'm not saying these cars don't act weird when the battery is going bad, but it just doesn't make any sense. Even if the battery is totally dead, as long as the car is running and the alternator is working correctly, there should be plenty of voltage to run the car correctly.

While that certainly SHOULD be the case, it unfortunately is not. Even people familiar with e39/e53's will tell you the weird crap that happens when the FSU or ignition switch starts going. Some really really weird stuff. And I mean weird....like open the vanity mirror on the passenger side so the light comes on and something else in the vehicle changes behavior weird.

BimmerLink can be purchased from the Bimmercode app and yes, it's what you need to register the new battery.
