Laser lights no longer available

My dealer told me that because of part shortages / supplier issues, laser lights are no longer available for some time. Sure enough, the configurator on BMW website no longer has them as part of the Premium Package...

I ordered an X7 several weeks ago with the package (including the lasers) and it’s coming to my dealer in a few days, but I changed my mind on couple options in the meantime and want to place another order now... But it’s going to be w/o lasers... Ugh..

I heard same thing from my dealer. It's delayed my X7

Yup. Quite a bit of chatter about it, affecting both X7's and X5's.

My car has been in quality check for 4 weeks! I assume the laser lights are holding it up.

Still available in Canada - at least to build. Is this a failure, supply or regulatory issue?

Did BMW at least lower the cost of the premium package now that it doesn’t include lasers? I don’t recall what it cost before.

Isn’t laser lights now just bundled for the $2100 ZPX Executive package (which includes skylounge LED roof, glass controls, and laser lights) for 50i orders only? Or am I looking at a dated version of the ordering guide?

They discontinued ZPX for the 50i until further notice due to supply shortages, but everything else is still available as stand alone options for now.

Sky lounge is still available, just as a stand alone option, rather than in a package (ZPX).

I just placed an order for a 50i and very disappointed with the lack of laser lights.

Got this email from BMW NA this morning:

"Unfortunately, we're unable to provide an estimated date when the Laser Light feature will be available again for the X7. I apologize for any disappointment this may cause."

My car is probably May production and I am hoping the lights could be added if available.

My contact at BMW said the lasers for the USA are limited to 300m range the same as the LEDs. In Europe they are 600m range. In his opinion the lasers offer minimal performance advantage for the USA market.

I have ridden in an i8 with laser power and they are incredible. If we could get full power lasers in the USA I would for sure want them.

I had a CA tell me yesterday that the laser lights were illegal in USA which is why they're no longer available on the X7. I question her knowledge since they're still available on the X5. She made it seem like the laser lights were going to be removed from all models. I doubt that's the case, but would be very disappointed if true.

I doubt her statement as well. I would tend to think it's a supply issue as stated above. If they were illegal, the first batch of X7's wouldn't have included them in the Executive Package (now removed).

The US spec laser lights don't provide better lighting compared to the LED lights since BMW is compelled to limit all laser lights to US specs and disable the no-dazzle high beam feature. The US needs to get with the times. That no-dazzle feature alone would provide a much better and safer experience for the driver, oncoming traffic, and cars you are following.

Not that such a thing should matter but several friends who have seen our X7 have mentioned how much they like the look of those laser lights. Definitely a cool factor that separates the X7 from the competition. I hope whatever happened that resulted in them being pulled from ordering will be resolved soon.

Interestingly, the X5 Configurator still has the lazorLights as a $1,000 option.
