You've gotta be kidding me.

2015 435i. First BMW. I've only had her for 10 months. I baby the absolute hell out of this vehicle. All maintenance done through the dealership, just hit 55K miles.

Yesterday, while out with my mother, I feel my car go limp. Then, I get a 'drivetrain malfunction' message. I turn the car off and back on. Message goes away.

After getting to our location, I pull out my phone and do a bit of research. Since this is the first time this has happened since purchase, I figure its not a huge deal. Couple of posts say 'just power the car off and back on. usually fixes the problem''. I shrug it off and we head to our next destination.

On the way, another drivetrain malfunction message. I pull over and restart the car, only this time I'm welcomed with a check engine light.

By this time, I'm livid. So I drop my mother back off to her vehicle and I get the car home so BMW can tow it to the dealership.

Mind you, this car is 100% stock. Nothing aftermarket has graced the engine.

I receive the quote this morning. $2100 for a fuel pump replacement. Are you serious? According to the dealership, these fuel pumps are apparently electrical and they can 'just go out like a light bulb'. You mean to tell me, the fuel pump on this vehicle has the integrity of a $0.60 light bulb? Also, I'm 5K miles out of my warranty, so looks like I'll have to do some shopping around.

Is it the high pressure fuel pump that failed?

I just found another thread with a discussion about fuel pump recall:

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1113640

I hope it's helpful!

From this quote, I don't see anything referencing a high pressure fuel pump.

The parts that are quoted:

Supply Module
Two 'rings'
Control unit for fuel pump

I appreciate it, but this doesnt apply to my vehicle, as it is a 2015 COUPE, not Gran Coupe.

Part numbers have 11 digits, not 10. You left off the last digit.

Regardless, I have not heard of a supply module going out at the same time as the pump. In fact, if the control unit went out, I am not sure you could reliably know the pump was out as well.

It's typical for a dealer to replace more than what's needed. Especially if they're already in the area. Usually when I decline their quote they offer some cheaper versions of the same repair (like not replacing components that aren't confirmed failed yet). It's worth a shot.

Either way I'd take it to an independent shop for the actual repair. Pay the $100 diagnostic fee and save $1000 on labor with a local bmw specialist.

Read edited post above.

I find it hard to believe they can reliably check lpfp condition if controller went bad.

First, I would recontact them (is this Dealer Or Independent) and ask specifically about the above recall.

Second I would ask how they can test pump reliably with controller bad.

Depending on what is said, there are much cheaper options. But before going there, get legit answers to the above.

Wow, so sorry this happen to you, I honestly think you got unlucky with a lemon fuel pump, I haven't seen this happen to anyone else at this low mileage straight out of warranty. Hope all turns out well.

What labor are they charging you? At worst it’s a 2 hour job.

MSRP on a LPFP is $440 and Controller $350. The rings $33 for both.

There are even cheaper alternatives.

I purchased a $100 used OEM controller about 6 weeks ago for my car but decided to go with an EOS BPM4 instead. I’d happily sell it for a $100.

New OEM pumps can be found in the $350ish range. I would not suggest used on a pump, fwiw.

$2000 is literally about double what this should go for with new OEM parts.

Man, I really appreciate all the information you guys are giving me.

I plan on picking the car up and bringing it to an independent either later today or in the morning. I'm also waiting on a call back from the dealership service tech so I can get an itemized list of part and labor costs.

Call their parts department with the 4 parts number and see what they quote you.

Isn't the parts cost on the estimate?
