I was rear ended today

I was stopped waiting to turn into a business park with my indicator on when a ford fiesta rear ended my car. Rear left damage. The other driver admitted liability. So hopefully it'll be repaired next week some time. Really hoping that the repair garage does a top class job!

You both hit each other so hard it moved the steering wheel to the wrong side of the car

Seriously I am sorry to see this. Let us know the cost and post pics of her all fixed up. I went through some front end damage a few month ago so I feel your pain.

For repair shops, I now usually pick the certified one with lambo and ferrari in the shop, they usually do a better job than the average ones. Make sure you inspect the new paint thoroughly, I had a rear ender on my previous car the E92 335i and they didn't fix the paint correctly, i can see cracks from certain angles of light, so make sure you check the new paint from all angles. Hope all turns out well.

This also reminds me why BMWs are good, you can see from the picture the ford focus took much more damage than the F30. BMWs are always built tougher.

Cars are made to absorb the forces of impact, so they often look bad, even from a relatively low-speed collision. Hopefully the trunk lid (slight scuffs) & rear quarter weren't affected. Rear door shut lines look good from here! Make sure the color & metallic flakes match the rest of the car.

Never easy to see these pictures. I hope everyone is OK.

What is the extent of rear damage: only the bumper or other panels? On the first picture, some damage is evident in the upper left corner above the bumper but it could just a reflection.

Luckily nobody was injured. The garage inspected the car in order to get a list of parts needed for the repair. A new bumper, diffuser, reflector, bracket and clips holding the side of the bumper in place. Wiring loom for the parking sensors along with one sensor. Metal beam running across behind the bumper, the inner rear light is marked so it's being replaced, rear mud flaps bring replaced and the dents and scratches on the lower half of the boot are being repaired. Panel gaps look good especially between the boot and the quarter panel
I told the guy who accessed the damage it had to be perfect. No orange peel, dodgy panel gaps, paint perfect etc. A shot across the bow does no harm!
It's suppose to be 3 days work to fix once the parts are all in.

No orange peel? It won't match the rest of the car! (It seems to be standard issue these days...)

Not true, have you seen the chinese car crash test where it crumbles like paper? More visible damage does not equate to better absorption. German cars don't crumple as much as JDM or domestic cars, yet they absorb more impact, its always been that way.

Painful to see your car like that but glad you’re OK. Good call making it clear that you want it to look perfect. Too many times you will see black cars and trucks with major swirls after having work done. Inspect it in the sun at all angles when it’s done.

Yes, you do need a happy medium. A 1970’s pickup probably would come through an accident less dented than any modern car, but the passengers surely wouldn’t. Likewise you don’t want a crap car that folds like a cheap suit (but I kinda doubt Chinese crash test standards measure up to US and Euro standards).

End of the day though, I’d rather have an extra 10k in damage (that insurance is going to cover anyway) vs years of neck or back pain. Glad nobody was injured in OP’s accident, so sounds like both cars did their job!

Yeah, the those Chinese cars are basically all one giant crumple zone (and shouldn't be compared to BMW or any other globally accepted auto makers)...I'm sure the passengers all died, but from being physically crushed in the cage, not from the unabsorbed energy transferred to them. Whereas a solid steel car without crumple zones would come out looking alright, but the passengers' bodies wouldn't.

The crumple zones are designed to absorb and keep the passengers in the cage safe(r).

I don't see how you can say German cars don't crumple as much as JDM or USDM but they absorb more impact. What magical material/engineering do they have that other manufacturers don't? Correct me if I'm wrong; I'm always willing to learn.

It's from personal experience. I've own 4 BMWs now, also from seeing other accidents, BMW always seem to be in better shape than the other impacted vehicle. I'm sure others have seen the same thing, can't be just me, my friends who own BMWs all agree as well.

I received the list of parts and work required to get my car back to normal. The total cost inc parts and labour is coming in at €2800 or almost $3200. List of work and parts attached. They didn't give a brekdown, just a total figure. Hopefully the parts will be in this week and they'll take the car in asap. The m Sport rear diffuser is costing €480! Genuine of course

I go my car back friday after being repaired. Very happy with the finish and quality of the work. I asked if they could paint the new diffuser and leave the middle section in its black natural finish and they obliged. FOC too!

Looks great! I remember when my E92 got rear ended (just crushed). It sucked but they repaired it great! If I find the picture of the crushed back end I'll post it.

Congrats!

OP, hope you’re doing well, I know is an old post but I’d like to know how your car handled after being repaired?

What was the liquid on the ground? Something from the car that hit you?
