need a bridge car while i wait for the M3 Pure
first things first it's impossible to find a manual transmission bmw. seriously impossible where I'm from in Canada. Walked into the dealerhship yesterday and the GM just laughed and said "yeah we don't ever carry them" and would never order one stock. every M car they have is auto. every 340 is auto. it's sad and bmw drivers have really lost their way. anyway this post isn't meant to be a rant. On to more important things. I sold my M2 and we got a Q7 as the little guy needed the room and my wife needed practicality so bye to the m2 and bye to the X3. We shared for a bit but for the spring I need a car. I have gone cross country trying to call people and places that have either a 2011 335 m sport 6 speed (super rare) or 2014 6mt 335i. rwd or awd doesn't matter. I actually just missed out on buying a absolute stunner 2011 335 m sport in le mans blue that was modded so insanely nice it might actually still be posted in the classifieds canada section of the 3 forum in here.
Anyway they are blowing out 2018 340 with like 10k to 13k off like nothing but all auto but do have m 1 and 2 packages so there is that. also have an m performance edition one as well. however like i said above I bleed for 6 speed and subaru has great offers on quick 2 year or 30 month leases for the 2019 STI as the new model drops next year. Golf R is also a 6-speed AWD but the 2016 I drove didn't seem all that great. the ride in the STI was raw and awesome (wife didn't love it, said it reminded her of our 2009 STI and we are not 26 anymore lol)... anyway please weigh in and give me your thoughts. I will only drive this thing for 2 years tops as like the title says I am first in line for the M3 pure but will I miss the 6 speed that bad for 2 years. Have people made similar choices / mistakes in thinking an auto could cut it even in a sports sedan like the 340...? |

Have you looked on autotrader? I just did a quick national search and found a few 335i with manual transmissions, with most being the M Performance Edition. Also found a few 340i with manual transmissions and M Performance Package I & II...

Why not a prior generation M3? Don't ever give in .. it just takes a little time. It took me 3 months and a flight to find mine (in the US even). Something good will come up.

I'm from Edmonton, & when I was car shopping, there were a whopping THREE F32 440i's with 6MT. I went to Vancouver for mine & lucked out since it is fully loaded & just sat in the showroom. The car you are looking for is definitely out there, it just takes time to find it. There's numerous 335i's & five 340i's with 6MT in Canada.
Good luck, here's a few I found from a quick search. 335: http://www.autotrader.ca/go/5-43022128 http://www.autotrader.ca/go/19-10939880 340: http://www.autotrader.ca/go/19-10976488 http://www.autotrader.ca/go/5-42234001

Remember the Seinfeld episode where Elaine tried to buy up all the contraceptive sponges in New York because they'd been discontinued? If you want to keep driving MTs you'd better find, buy and store enough MTs to last your remaining life span.

Yeah it's over for the three series. Maybe the new M3 will have a manual and the dream will live on… But who knows.
I guess it's time for the next phase of our lives… Electric cars. I will skip the ICE automatics. No thanks |

Manuals are dead. It's time to get used to it or get left behind. While I wouldn't blame you for jumping on a manual F80 M3/4 right now, I wouldn't NOT get a M3/4 just because it has a DCT, which, by the way, still gives you a connected feeling. Is it missing a pedal? Sure, but do I miss it after 20+ years of driving a manual? At first, yes, but I got over it. I track with a DCT, it's superior in every single way except weight.
Would I get a "Pure" M3? Probably, I look forward to one more chance to own a 6MT, but it's more because I'm not sold on the ZF8 on an M car... yet. I love the DCT, the ZF8 can't beat it... for now. In the end, it's about the drive, hitting the apex, knowing my brake zones etc. I think Ferrari drivers feel connected, I shouldn't have a problem with it.

There’s some good choices out there depending on price range and preference. Current or used M3 of any generation. Porsche 911 or Cayman/Boxster, used or new. The various “hot hatches” like GTI, WRX, Civic Si. I assume the muscle/pony cars like Mustang, Camaro, Challenger all still have sticks available?
Any of the above would be pretty fun to own for a couple years, IMHO. |

If I were you, I'd get something new/different. I personally do not measure my worth by my car's MSRP and I love driving as many different cars as I can as long as it has a manual transmission. Whether it's a WRX or a Golf R, you will have fun and it will be a new experience.
I got a Chevy SS and I'm so glad I did because it was just fun really getting into Chevy small blocks and testing out tech like MagenRide (which is light years beyond any active dampers BMW puts in their cars). The best part is that once you get rid of it and order your M3 pure, you'll appreciate the better interior and build quality all that much more after having driven a lower tier car. |

Thanks for all your comments guys. I'm in Winnipeg so right in the middle of the big old country and it seems only way out east toronto / GTA and Quebec and then all the way west like BC and I think someone mentioned kelowna above having any. i think you're right because i've scoured auto trader every day for the last month or so and while they do exist out there they usually are private sale and over priced or they are on a random dealer lot which I have a hard time trusting. I'm still kicking myself over the 2011 le mans blue 335i which sold on here.
anyway i do appreciate the comments on the auto side and I don't dislike dct but the zf is straight up auto and I really struggle with how much would I miss rowing gears. The 'tier' or 'class' of car doesn't matter as also mentioned above I do appreciate and like to try all cars. i think all of us love cars period as much as we love BMW's and that's why we spend (waste so much time talking / bantering on here. Anyway the search continues and I'm going to drive an auto 340i at the dealership. Honestly I will probably end up with the STI. It's raw and fun and 0.5% with $3k off msrp and hand it back after 2 years... tough to argue. Even the heavily discounted 340's with $10k+ off are still more money and higher rate. and the STI despite it being ugly and with an interior only a mother could love ONLY comes in a 6MT |

To the OP, perfect time to try something new. If you get a 6MT SS, i'm sure you can sell it for a minimal loss. However, you are in CAN, so I know the market there is very different. I would give the Golf R another try. I owned a 2018 GTI, and it was an absolute awesome car with a great motor and chassis. I have driven the Golf R with the tuned EA888, and IMO, the MQB is probably one of the best platforms out there right now. It is a lot quicker than any 335/340 and has an amazing steering feel. |

QuikM2, I just leased a loaded AW '16 340iX MSport 6MT w/ 10k km from Elite BMW in the Ottawa area last week. BMW Financial is offering 1.9% for 3 years on CPO. Was only listed for a couple days before I scoped it up. I am out in Calgary and waiting for delivery now.
I agree that there are not many 6MTs F30s out there. I am a pretty die hard MT guy. I have driven lots of dual clutch and newer sporty autos. They are fun to drive and definitely faster. I still like to row my own. A perfectly rev'd match heal and toe down shift is so very satisfying. Gonna have to get the auto rev match shut off in my F30. I was driving a Jeep SRT for the past couple years. An SUV is actually better for me as I work in the construction industry and I am on our construction sites several days per week, so I need a bit of ground clearance. The SRT was my first daily driver with an auto in 25+ years of owning vehicles. The SRT is pretty fun to drive, sounds great with an exhaust, handles better than 5000bls should, cruisers great at speed and the paddle shift work pretty well. The steering is pretty vague and the big 295 tires wonder a bit. Got the itch to get into something new like I do every couple years. Was looking at X3 M40. Some how I started looking at cars again as I didn't fall in love with the X3. I thought about a Focus RS (drift mode!) briefly, but it is too small. Then was looking at F80 M3s. My old E90 M3 is one of my all time favorite cars. The F80 ground clearance is 4.7" vs 340ix 5.7", 1" doesn't sound like much but will help. BTW, Jeep SRT is 8.3". Got on to the 340iX. I only looked on line online for a few days and found the one I leased. It was kinda a impulse buy. Last F30 I drove was a 328iX rental car in Kelowna a few years ago. Hoping the ground clearance wont be too big of an inconvenience. I also have a lift Jeep JK on 35s I can take if I need it. It is terrible to drive, although the 5.3L LS engine swap makes good noises/power and it is a 6MT! |
