Over the last few weeks my car has developed a fairly significant wobble particularly at higher speeds.

Needless to say the dealer initially offered looking at it in 3 weeks time.

Being me off course I decided to look into things a bit more and quite quickly found that the offside front disk was warped. Rather than faff around with the dealer again I just replaced the front disks, pads etc myself. Wobble all gone (as expected) and the car is back to normal. I used Zimmerman disks and pads and replaced the wear sensor and mount bolts at the same time. Total job time took about 90 mins.

After I got the offending disk off I measured it up and found that the outer plate had bowed outwards over about 20% of its area by more than 1mm. Which rather explains why the car felt so awful.

Would what the dealer would have made of it (and charged you). Dare say they'd have taken a lot longer than 90 minutes!

Dealer would have just charged you full price and said consumable items.
Why I always change brakes myself

I'm not sure why you would expect the dealer to view it as anything other than consumable items.

If (for example) you drive and brake hard and then sit on the brakes, you will impart a hell of a lot of heat into the contact area between the pad and disk, warping the disk.

I've not driven this car much differently to other cars and have never had a brake disk warp before. I might take it into work and get it x-rayed to see if there was a manufacturing flaw.

On the other hand I'm very impressed with the one piece Zimmerman disks and pads so far.

I had a warped rear disc on my last 335d - that seemed pretty unusual to me (to the point that I actually assumed it was a front disc and changed those out expecting to fix it & it didn't) - anyway it meant I changed all of mine out for slotted & dimpled Zimmermann discs & I too can thoroughly recommended them... We have a few fords at the bottom of steep hills in my neck of the woods which never seems a good thing for your brakes - can't say what did cause it though - just one of those things...
