Launch control. Cool down time?

Should 5 minutes do it?
I don't think I should just park up and shut down.

I tried launch control for the first time this morning after a 45 minute drive. Everything up to temperature in my view.

I couldn't stop saying: "fucking hell." For a about a minute.

It was a short burst in our private car park. Don't think I have ever smiled so much driving it.

You will probably get a few different answers here just due to varying opinions. With that behind said. I was always told 2 to 5 miles of easy driving after thrashing the car around. What does that mean? Im not sure to be honest. How hard would you consider thrashing? Would going 25mph around town suffice, or would it be better to take a quick lap on the highway? Is it 10 degrees or 90? There are a lot of variables so I would predict there is no right or wrong necessarily. Curious to see others opinions on this.

I wouldn't worry, like you say it is a short burst.

Now if you had just done a 20min session around a track, yeah you need to give it a cool down lap or 2. but that is an entirely different scenario.

30d, 35d, or 40d with x drive are the only ones to try it in. Makes your psssengers laugh out loud first time you do it. 40i is hugely underwhelming in launch and not worth trying it in my opinion.

Did it hundreds of times in my bitdi Audi, was great fun and didn't seem to cause any problems.

the 335d onboard manual says 5mins cool down.

I dont think launch is a great deal more dramatic than a normal start.....

If you want a full-fat launch experience, get someone in a Focus RS to take you out!

I've not done it in a 335d, but the settings in a similar engined Audi, with the same gearbox, was significantly different, off the line up to 30-40 at least. A big push in the back which you don't get in a normal start.

I did it in a Carrera 4 at the Porsche experience centre, and the diesel pushed you harder in the back initially than that did.

Is there any way of seeing how many launches your car has carried out? I've never actually done one, with all the dash cam disconnecting going on at services and test drives it would be interesting indication of it the cars are being abused or not.

I was told you couldn't see it on the Audi with the same gearbox.

But, there is a chequered flag that comes up on the dash when you do it in the BMW, so it might record.

I wouldn't worry about it in a 40i, no one will do it more than half a dozen times in total. It does the opposite of launch and doesn't give any kind of thrill. It holds the revs too low and you go slow, then fast. You can do that without launch.

Diesel held at 3,000 revs, 40i at just over 2. Seems too low.

You can abuse the car without ever using launch control so that's not a great measure.

I think thrashing a cold engine is far worse than occasional use of launch control. There's a video on youtube of a 911 that launched 100 times consecutively with no problems, not to be recommended on a BMW though.

That's a fair point too.

I used to use LC all the time in my 335d all the time probably 100 times in the 6 months I had it, but I have to say I found it pretty lacklustre I only did it repeatedly to try and beat my best time on the laptimer app.

I used LC in a tuned RS3 with downpipes a few months ago and that was outrageous a different level to the 335d.

I need to launch the 7 for a laugh but the laptimer won't connect to the idrive for some reason.

A mate at work has one of the old classic scoobies as a weekend toy that's pushing between 450-500bhp. That has anti-lag and allsorts and some sort of launch control for a manual. He took me out in it one day, found a nice quiet private road, flicked knobs and dials, and it sat there popping and banging then took off like a scalded cat....fired out of a cannon....on a moving train. Fucking loopy

I've done it a few times in the 340i and there is a big difference between mashing your foot and launch control. Best time I've got with mashing my foot was 4.83s, best with LC was 4.23. Quite a difference

Forget that. It scared the wife. Wish I had caught her reaction. She is a boy racer. I drive boring. I thought I would share my discovery. I was told off and had to make it up to her so I did with a Nando's. : for someone who enjoys traffic light races I was taken aback by the disdain.

I've neglected to mention the launch control to wifey. She's bloody fast enough as it is without that little nugget of information. I fear for the gearbox if she ever discovers it....
