F30 Brake Disks Question

I have a 2015 330d msport. Today been for a service at 24,000 miles. I have been told there is a lip on the inner edge of the rear disks. I was told that on my next service when the pads are replaced it will need new disks.
I do very few miles, around 50 miles a week.
I just wanted a second opinion as i always thought brake disks should last a few more miles than BMW say?

General consensus & rule of thumb is 2x sets of pads to 1x set of discs then it's pads & discs (this was definitely the case with my previous E91) But If course this is very much dependant on individual use and many variables including how much you load your car and how much you sit on you brakes or give them hard task. There's quite a few brake posts about might be some answers in there for you. Are you running regular brakes or the blue calliper M Sport set.

I would imagine your problem is one of too few miles.

Car gets driven regularly, corrosion doesn't get a chance to 'worm in' to the disks.

Especially the rears (which are very little-used in regular driving, as brake bias is towards the front), minimal driving is going to lead to a greatly shortened disk life.

Is it wear or corrosion? A picture would help, before passing too much opinion.

Corrosion will mean discs are suspect, may well require replacement when new pads are needed.

Discs do form a lip anyway because the pads don't go all the way to the edge - normally a bit of a lip isn't an issue.

Sometimes if the calliper has got a bit sticky the disc can wear unevenly and corrode where the pad doesn't make contact and that could mean new discs required.

As already said it's difficult to say without seeing a picture though.

That image is from the video the dealer sent to me. The car is an MSport but the calipers are not blue

24,000 miles. And quoted £1600 for replacement brakes? Really?

Ok that does looks like quite a lip!

£1600 is an absolute joke though, even for M Sport brakes that would be a ridiculous price!

£1600 is robbery......... easy job to do ....... buy quality replacement discs e.g. Zimmermann from GSF in their 60% off sale and either fit them yourself or pay small business mechanic to do it for you. Full set incl pads will be a quarter of that + fitting

Looks like normal wear and tear. Brake disc's will lip where the brake pad doesn't touch the disc. Unless the discs are heavily worn or has bad scoring then all ypu only need to replace brake pads when due.

Dealers will always tell you your brakes are worn to try get you to replace. But just ignore them and replace only when they need to be replaced.

Disc's last a long time, usually at least 60k miles.

I replaced my disc's on my previous car due to bad rusty rotors. Cost me around £200 for 4 discs and 4 sets of pads.
I think your dealer is trying to rip you off for work that doesn't need doing.

I've just bought a full set of discs, pads and sensors for my 340i with m-performance brakes (Larger Blue ones).

All in, front and rear were only about £650. Fitting is easy and will be done at home.
No idea where they get the £1600 figure from. Must be short on the Christmas party pot.

Much cheaper discs could have been bought, but I opted for the "like OEM" 2 piece discs which are all much more than the solid ones.
(Around £260 per pair for the front and £200 per pair for the rear).

Stick with the 2 piece discs if you have the larger discs (370mm), solid discs do not do well at that size.

I would agree with others who have said the wear is probably entirely normal and to be expected on a low mileage car - reason being you are probably in stop-start local traffic conditions almost all the time - hence proportionate to a high mileage driver you are on the brakes far more per mile driven. In the past I'd expect to get 80k+ miles from front disks but I was doing 30k/year up and down the motorway at quiet times and I may only have used the brakes a few times per 150 miles. In comparison I was amazed when my wife's car which only did 3-4k/years needed new disks at 12k. Of course, driving style/degree of engine braking used will play quite a part - I can follow someone for miles who is not anticipating and is constantly on the brakes vs not needing to use them at all.

Do not get BMW to do the brakes at anything more than half that price!! If you don't want to do it yourself (many of us do, which tells you how easy the job is and therefore why it shouldn't cost the earth to have done), just take it to a local independent or even a chain come to that - there is nothing special about BMW brakes. If you want to save more source the disks & pads yourself - loads of threads on here with advice on options - you should be able to get a set with pads and a sensor for around £200 & perhaps pay £100 or so to have them fitted... They are a consumable so has no bearing on service history/any extended warranty etc. and the wear indicator in iDrive is easy to reset. Sounds like you've got a year to shop around anyway...

I've done 30,000 miles from new (440i M Sport) and my car is going in to the garage for its first set of discs and pads in 2 weeks time. That price is crazy though, Brystone in Totton are charging me roughly £1,400 in total for pads, discs, oil change and the ACS lowering springs!!!

Edit: although I used it a lot when new, I now only do about 30miles a day and normally only drive my car 4 days a week, so not too dissimilar usage to you
