On the speedometer, you get a red hue on the needle when you go above the speed limit and it trails back to the indicated speed limit. I really like the fact that it is very "non-intrusive" but the information is there.
You may actually see the effect that you are referring to if you set a speed limit in the i-drive settings. I have not tried that because mine would be red all the time... |

In the 5 series loaner cars that had the posted speed limit displayed onto the Heads Up Display and you exceeded the posted limit, your MPH on the HUD would turn red. I haven’t driven my M5 in awhile, but I could swear I configured this on my car but it never worked.
