High mileage 340/440 owners

Any other 340/440 owners racking up the miles?

I've hit 20,000 miles this week in 13 months. It would have been quicker but I was off work last year for 6 weeks with stress.

I know at this mileage a 335d or 330d would have been the sensible decision, but life is too short!

Too bloody right it is. 12000 miles in 6 months with the M4. Averaging 26mpg... couldn't be happier!

As you say life is too short. At least you are getting use out of it and enjoying it. I'm at 2k miles in 4 months and looking for reasons to take it out.

That's some miles in a M4!

And I only got 27.5 mpg out of my last tank. Although that included a lot of driving with gearbox in sport.

Not quite 15k in 29 months. Sorry! Still feels like I am getting to know the car...

I've done 7k in the year I've owned it. It's just ticked over 30k and it's 3 years old. The 7k miles I've owned it I've thrashed the shite out of it and loved it. 23mpg over my ownership.

6500 miles in 3 ½ months 440i with MPPSK average 33mpg!

At this rate I'll be at 24k for the year!

Hi CB, sounds like yours has been more gainfully employed than mine since they left the factory together! Still enjoying it? Any plans for what's next?

Hi MashinBenzin

The car has performed well and I still look forward to driving her. I’m really not sure what will replace the 440 when the PCP deal finishes in September. I’ve considered three options, but decided to defer a decision until mid year.
Option one - replace the 440 with possibly the new 340 or even the 330e when they are available. Alternatively, I like the new Evoque or may even scratch the itch which I’ve had for a while to own an Alfa - possibly the Stelvio or the Giulia.
Option two is to make the final payment and keep the car for the time being but my concern is that it will rapidly lose value due to the mileage that I cover.
Option three is replace her with a Golf GTI or similar on a cheap lease and to upgrade my Boxster to a 718S. The scheme has merit given the terrible state of the roads and the constant gridlock where you can’t use the performance of the 440i. However, I believe that a more mundane runabout would quickly become boring after the 440 and given the time I spend in the car, I want something I enjoy! Whilst the 18000 miles I cover each year is not high compared to some people, that does not reflect the time spent in congestion on Surreys roads.....

Life with the 440 has been good although this car has had the highest number of problems of any BMW I have owned. There’s been a couple of software glitches that needed updates and a new steering rack was required last year when a front end knock became progressively louder. The garage initially told me it was the pads moving - only when the noise got so bad that the tech said "it sounds like your whole steering rack is loose" did they manage to diagnose the fault. The car is just about to have a new OS door card fitted as I noticed that in the hot weather in the summer, one of the plastic welds underneath the speaker had become detached for about 3 inches. It's also had its fair share of of squeaks but most have been cured now (glovebox and tailgate).

Whilst that sounds like quite a list of issues, such is the character of the 440 that the issues are quickly forgiven.

I would say that once you've hit 3 years the rate of depreciation markedly slows, irrespective of the mileage you are doing. The difference between a high a low mileage car at 4 years old is only a few months payment on new car anyway, and that's not even covering the depreciation in the first couple of years of a new deal.

14k in 11 months. Engine just gets better. Not happy with the long service intervals. Especially with disintegrating oil filters.

Whilst I would normally agree, I benefitted from the free increase in PCP mileage that BMW we’re offering at the time so the GFV is significantly higher than would otherwise be the case. Once the cost of a warranty extension is factored in together with consumables that will need replacing around the 3 year mark, there isn’t a lot of difference in the cost per annum

I've now done 34,000 in 18 months of pretty much problem free motoring. I'm averaging 37mpg so far which is quite remarkable (most of my driving is motorway to/from work) but it still gets a good work out as well.

Do you pay for your own fuel? It just sound like an odd choice when you're racking up that sort of miles. A good choice. But expensive.

Bit of man maths (bored at work!!)... but assuming a 35d gives 10mpg more (i know its probably less)

based on my local filling station being 113.7p petrol and 123.7p diesel.

Your fuel bill has been: £4749.80 compared to a 35d which would have been £4068.07 about £38 a month difference..... pretty negligible really - compared to the cost of depreciation.

All my own fuel. My previous car was a 335d which did 38.5mpg over its life so the change isn't all that much. Grins per mile have increased a lot though.

Good on ya. but 38 mpg from a 335d is poor.
