320d courtesy car

Got a car to keep me going but I really miss the following:

HUD
CarPlay
Folding rear seats
Comfort access

For the short time I'll have it, I can forego ACC and the heated steering wheel.

The B48 engine is nasty as fuck though

I agree. Sounds like a tractor.

The B58 seriously spoils you. Even the couple of six cylinder diesels that I have driven since having it have seemed very rough to my ears and unwilling to my foot. I'm in another one tomorrow, will report back

I also don't expect to see a drivetrain error either - will be calling them tomorrow to swap it out.

I'm in a 320d msport too.
To be honest, the 6 cylinder engine is in a different league, but as a car to keep me on the road, it does a good job. The fuel economy in it is superb.
Going to be a world of difference when I move to my M140i in early March

I originally had a 118d, but that went back after 1 day due to a knocking noise from the front wheel

After a long road trip to California, I have agree on the 2.0 4-banger diesel being superb on fuel.

As for the 118d, it sounds like the loaner cars in the UK are even more shagged out than the ones I get here.

You have obviously not driven some American PETROL 4-cylinder engines. Our N47 is a paragon of smoothness compared to most standard 2.0-2.5 litre petrol lumps on the US. Yes, it can SOUND a little rattly, but at least it's not beating up your hands with vibration like an Ingenium diesel in an XE.

We don't get the B47 over here and probably never will since VW trashed the US diesel market.

118d is one of the worst modern cars I’ve ever driven. No power it just sort of slowly adds speed and the steering/throttle feel like they aren’t connected to the same car!

How times have changed!

In my younger days, if we had the 118d, it would be out performing "lightning fast" iconic cars like the Lotus Cortina and Mini Cooper 1275 S.

Lol, very true.

By comparison a few years back I had a 116i that was much better, actually felt like it had a little bit of pep (one of the remap champions of the bmw world too since its the same engine as the 118, I think 70-80bhp is possible, going from 130 to 200+ bhp!)

Can't say whether it's all the loaner companies, but Enterprise, who BMW use in the uk do seem to be getting a lot of bad press on here currently.

Any chance for a 6-pot owner to marvel at how terrible 4-pots are and wonder how 4-pot owners even manage to drag themselves out of bed should not be passed up. It's pretty pathetic.

Is it you that has an A6 and mentions it in comments about how poor F3x sound insulation is?

Not sure if a particular comment wound you up, but it would be a pretty boring forum if no-one was able to state that they felt 'something' is better than 'something else'. E.g. xenon headlamps vs. Halogen

Cards on table, I maligned six cylinder diesels above. I have spent 26 years owning four cylinder cars, 10 of them in diesels, and short of three years in a petrol 6. I've spent most of my driving time in cars massively inferior to the ones I am being critical of.

PS. I think our good old friend with the msport key case had a great thread on this very topic. Happy days.

It is and it is.

I'm not saying you shouldn't assert that one thing is better than another, but the comments on here suggest a 320d is basically a Lada but if you have exactly the same car, but with two more cylinders, then it's motoring ambrosia.

I shall probably get another 5-series which was a fantastic car but the sound insulation in the F3x is just unacceptable to me, regardless of the engine. What gets me is how people assert that a 320d and a 330d may as well be from a different planet when they aint.

My F31 was a very noisy car, lots of wind/tyre noise.....my missus i10 was quieter on at motorway speeds! I've since switched to a G31 (same engine as F31), it's in a different league, keeps out sound very well.

Fair enough, but if you have something with poor sound insulation then every little helps. The 440i vs. 420d is simply miles apart in refinement, the lower the speed the greater the difference. I guess the 30d would be somewhere in between (not driven F3x 30/35d).

When I had a 420d for 24 hours, I was still driving my E90 320d with 105k on the clock. The latter had got very noticeably louder with the passing of years and I was surprised how little better a brand new B48 was.

Obviously the 440i engine noise is hugely preferable to the 420d engine noise but it's still a noise. Is there any difference in road / wind noise between the two? I'd be surprised if there were.

I'm hoping the X3 is quieter as road noise on any F3x is annoying, regardless of engine.

It is, I test drove a G01 before going for the G31.

I'd say no difference in wind or road noise. Even at 70mph, though, the diesel drone is still heard, so the petrol is still a shade quieter

Below 50mph, the difference is huge.
