Weather looking good, might swap the winter tyres off...

10 day forecast looks very mild, and the long range forecast models are saying low chance of a cold end to winter, so I'm thinking of swapping back on to summer rubber. Anyone else considering the same?

If I was in Scotland then I'd probably not risk it, but I just can't see it being all that cold again beyond late Feb.

The winter tyres have been awesome in the snow and freeing weather, but they're cack when it gets above 10 degrees, and if the weather is good I'll fancy getting out for a run.

It's only going to be 10 degrees and above for a few daylight hours at best for the next month or so I would say. If I had them, I would keep them on until it nears the end of March.

But at 4-10 degrees the summer tyres still feel better. Above 10 degrees the winters are terrible. No way they're staying on till the end of March!

I don't bother with winters on the BM as, to be honest, I can avoid having to go out in the worst of it and for 90% of the "winter" their benefit is not so great for me that you can't get by without...

To be honest, I wouldn't get the benefit from performance options, either, in better weather...

I'd be best off with an all season tyre but not sure what options I might have...

If I could have got an all season tyre to fit the 437s for the M4 then I'd have taken them over the full winter option. The new generation of all season tyres are a huge step on from before - they give you very decent summer tyre performance, superb cold and wet performance, and decent snow performance. Probably 90-95% as good as a summer in summer and better than a full winter in typical British wintery conditions where it isn't actually snowing all that much.

Have a look at

Well this time last year it was similar weather to currently in Norfolk, 6-8°C day, 0-2°C night, and then it was Antarctica at end of Feb/start of March!

I’ll leave mine on until April just in case.

Yeah I thought that, but looking at the Met long range models, they're saying the chances of cold easterlys are 15%.

I'll leave them on the 330e, and if the worst happens I can always swap back.

Anyway, you've got no such worries in your CUV!

I agree, most people, especially those with a second car could manage for the odd day we get snow. Obviously also dependent on where you live.

I looked at Michelin Cross Climates a couple of years ago but at the time they only went up 17" so that was out. Eventually went for a set of winter wheels. I'm quite risk averse so didn't want to get stuck anywhere miles from home if the weather turned bad. Also I had a bad experience coming down a long hill once, on my Summers where I slid for what seemed like forever on a midges of snow on the road, no more than 5mm. Shit me up and I was lucky I didn't hit anything.

Only last week I rang a contractor I do work with and although I know his name, I don't know him personally. It was about 8:00am and I'm talking to him on handsfree and he sounds flustered, I ask him if he's ok and then could hear the beeping of his parking sensors. I told him that that sounds seems familiar and was he driving a Beamer, he said yes. He went onto to tell me he would need to ring me back because he was stuck in the snow.

I said, if affordable, that Winters are the way to go. Get some on and you won't be disappointed.

Winters are obviously better for cold and Summers better for warm weather but if you do get any all seasons with the larger sizes then let us know

You can't have worn them out already though? Potenzas are made from Vibranium I think... and score a 10 on the Mohs' scale I believe.

The ones on my 330e have lasted 52000 miles on the rear and so far about 57000 miles and counting on the front. Lease companies must love them.

They look such a God damn mess as you say very hard hopefully 2 tonnes and a fleeting second of 500lb/ft will be enough to get rid of them, it'll stop me chopping it in during the summer.

So how's that being sensible thing working out for you?

Having gone the other way after a run of 7 diesels in a row, I wondered if after 6 months in and in the depths of winter, when the novelty had worn off, whether I'd regret buying the M4. Thankfully not even a bit of it!

If they've got the M+S rating, yet still more than good enough for summer use then it's a no brainer for them I guess.
