Yes, it will. Even without idrive. I'm not sure how it works exaccctly, but i've driven an e90 without it and it worked. I couldn't really figure out how to change songs because i'm not used to it... but it works

Yes it will play CD-MP3's...
Also, If you have I-drive, it'll play DVD-MP3's in the DVD slot...

Yes, all of them play MP3's... The I-drive is handy because you see all of your folders.

There's a thread that shows the specs of what it can play. For some reason, I can't get WMAs to play on it, but I have essentially all MP3 anyway.
Must be 44.1kHz, it can't play 48kHz sample rate. Also, I think it won't play anything > 320 kbps, but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure there's a restriction on the bit rate. It reads and displays the filename and ID3 "artist" and "song" information (the latter only while playing). Most of my stuff is encoded at 128 or 192 kbps. At that rate, you can fit around 100 songs on the CDR.

hmm cool thanks for the info guys. I popped in one CD that played fine on my old aftermarket head unit and it didn't work so I assumed the base model stereo couldn't handle MP3s.
I'll double check on the encoding! |

BK, when was the last time you got your software updated? Since I got mine done a cpl of months ago (I don't know what version), the I-drive displays all of the information much better than before the update.

I didn't mean to suggest my car reads MP3s poorly, because it's very good. The filenames I use are all "Artist - Song.mp3." On iDrive, it lists them in alpha order by first letter as Artist - Song. Then when the song is playing, it uses two lines, with ID3 artist tag on top and ID3 song name tag on bottom. I've noticed where my filename is a little different than the ID3 tags, it uses the filename in the one-line list, but the ID3 tag in the two-line list (while playing). For example, if the file name is "DMB - Satellite.mp3" then it will list as DMB - Satellite in the list, but when playing, it might say, for example, Dave Matthews Band on the top line and Satellite [Acoustic] on the bottom line. I really like how it works, I just wish there was a faster way to scroll through 100+ songs. Being able to jump by first letter (like on the Address Book) would be great. At least let us scroll backwards "past" 1 to wrap around to the end, or forward past the last song to start at the beginning. Don't make me have to scroll all the way back!

There *is* some way to jump, like 10 songs at a time, I believe, but I can't remember (its in the manual, I think).
My stuff (originally ripped for the Creative Zen Nano), is all WMA, organized into folders, each album gets its own folder, with artist, album name, song title, all part of the filename (all done by the Creative software). The BMW CD software knows how to negotiate those folders as a tree, so you can easily jump albums too... and you can traverse at the song level, or at the album level, much like Windows Explorer... pretty neat... |

Yes it does, my 07 played it without any issues. Just burn the cd as a regular data cd and not a music cd.
Good job on resurrecting a 9 year old thread. |
