M40i tire tread life

Hey all,

I have an M40i with the 19” all season Pirelli run flats that’s not even a year old and as 7,700 miles and the tires are already shot and won’t pass inspection.

Does anyone have a good all season recommendation? This is ridiculous that these tires didn’t even last a year or 10k miles.

My 19s came with Bridgestone Dueler AS RF. Though at less than 1,000 miles don't have a lot of use on them yet.

Which Pirelli did yours come with? Cinturato? That's crazy at such low use. Shouldn't they last at least 20-30m miles?

Interesting. I'm on Pirelli RF 20s with 10k miles and I can't seem to get rid of the tread so I can justify getting some PS4s!

Unfortunately for me and those with 19s, PS4 doesn't seem to be available in 245/50/19.

Also, I don't know why the dealer has any x3 in Texas (especially in Houston) with AS tired instead of summer/performance. Mine came with AS tires but I'd only drive in dry or wet conditions and never snow/ice down here :

21" Alenxa's

I've got over 15,000 on my Bridgestones and the fronts still look great. The rears are wearing (still not to the wear bars) on the rear in the very center of both tires. It almost looks as though they were over inflated but I've ran 38 as prescribed since the beginning.

One reason for my good mileage is that this time (previous 535i/M4) I did not let the local BMW persons screw it up with their constant pushing to get an alignment. The current alignment is from the factory and the fronts are near perfect with respect to wear patterns.

I've used launch control many times and run through the mountains of NC with spirit so I just can't complain about tread wear to date. I'll probably stick with the Bridgestones when I renew them this spring.

Sorry it should be Alenza

Here are a few good high-performance A/S tire review videos from Tire Rack:

I decided on the Conti DWS06 (non run-flat), and they handle pretty well for A/S tires. I only have a few thousand miles on them so far, so I can't speak to tread wear yet.

One thing I don't like about the Conti's...they have a brown-ish color and are very hard to keep shiny (if that's important to you). I have to put 2 coats of tire shine on them after every wash (they soak it up like a sponge) just to keep them looking "black".

I will probably go with the Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 next time as they seem to be more performance-oriented.

If I recall Build Your Own correctly, if you stick with the 19's on an M40i, all seasons are standard, but you can opt for summers. The dealers likely don't pay attention at that level when they are ordering cars for stock. My dealer in DFW only orders 20's and 21's on dealer stock M40i's. You have to get summers if you want the M Sport diff (which I did). The A/S equipped cars are speed limited to 130 mph.

I'd expect the A/S tires to last a while. To the OP: What is the tread life number on your Pirelli's?

I have 21,000 miles on the Bridgestone Runflats....mostly highway miles.

Excellent wear so far. I rotate and balance the tires every 10,000 miles.

10K miles, on the 20” staggered Bridgestone Alenza RFT’s... shockingly I’d say only about 30% worn and I have a heavy right foot.

My 19” Bridgestone alenza have tread left, but have worn horribly and now make terrible noise and need replacing. I’ve ordered Michelin pilot sport a/s 3+. 13k miles, beyond disappointed with these crappy tires.

Are your current tires all weather or summers?

I am at about 8000 on my bridgestone 19 a/s recently had them rotated front<-->back I figure i should be able to get to 16k or so, maybe not 20. I have the spare tire option and look forward to finding a good set of non-RFT tires late this year. With the amount of rain we've had in this area since I took delivery, I've been more than happy with the all season tires. I don't need to drive over 130 anyway

I currently have a tester on loan. 2018 with 21 inch wheels and Alenza summer all season RFT. It has 15k km`s on it (9300 miles) and tires are still in pretty good shape. Fronts had 7-8 32nds of tread and rears had 8.5... At that rate they should be good for 30-35k km's, which sounds reasonable for a performance vehicle without the ability to properly rotate due to staggering.

I'm surprised to see an old set of 21" with over 9,000 miles to have that much tread depth left... can you double check if your loaner car already had a brand new replacement set recently installed?

Lucky, i barely made it to 6500 with the bridgestone alenza's, ridiculous the life on those tires. All uneven, and dealer acknowledged they were uneven but that is how the car behaves. ITS "NORMAL" wear for this type of car ( according to the tech at the dealer). Took it all the way up to Corporate and they still did not give a crap. Corporate stated the mechanic knew best and they could not do anything for me. pfff...

Just got my answer - of that 15k km's, about 3k was on winter tires last winter. Rest is on those tires and they are the originals... so let's say 7100 miles on them and still that much tread. At least now I have it documented via email that these tires should still have 7.5-8.5 of tread left at 12000 km's, if ever BMW tries to tell me that it's normal for them to be shot at 10k .

Typo in my post above, I noted the Alenza's as summer all seasons (lol, not sure what that is). I meant to only say Summer. Just didn't want to confuse anyone.

Holy crap - did not realize how expensive tires in the 21 inch size were. Even non-runflats in that size (275/34R21) are ridiculous.
