how to measure tire tread
Can I use this guide from Tirerack to measure tire tread? Is this accurate?
U.S. coins can be substituted for a tire tread depth gauge as tires wear to the critical final few 32nds of an inch of their remaining tread depth. Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Lincoln's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32" of tread depth remaining. 2/32" remaining tread depth Place a quarter into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Washington's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4/32" of tread depth remaining. 4/32" remaining tread depth Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32" of tread depth remaining. 6/32" remaining tread depth Once you have determined the approximate remaining tread depth in the first location, you can complete your measurement of each tire by placing the coin into additional locations at lease 15 inches apart around the tire's central circumferential groove, as well as in its inner and outer grooves. This will help detect uneven wear caused by mechanical or service conditions. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=51

You can use that sort of measurement. Tirerack knows their stuff about tires This thread is probably actually a very useful thread for a lot of people here. You can trust them

If you were wondering about the accuracy why not just measure some coins? It's not like we're talking about subjective distances here.

Yeah, im sure if it passes the top of the head of lincoln, or the memorial or whatnot, you can always mark the coin somehow and measure it. It will give you a much better/more accurate measurement

Use a ruler, mark off 5/32 on the penny. You've got your 5/32 coin gauge
