RS5, 450hp, and 500 torque! >M3 or <M3?
I posted this in some other thread already, but I wanna to post it here so we can compare. RS5 is suppose to come out sometime next year. Will it get your pick over the M3? It will have about 450hp and 500 torque! I am suppose to get a M3 in Dec, but the RS5 is giving me second thoughts. Both the RS5 and M3 look really good. I am guessing the RS5 will be more unique than the M3 though. Interior wise, no doubt RS5 wins! It has even got more hp and torque than the M3. I am guessing it will have better performance than the M3, but even if it does not I will probably still get it for its better interior, hp, and torque! If it performs better than the M3 it's a must get, but if it does not it will still be a very attractive car. It will be like a C63 with better looks, better interior, more hp, more torque, and better handeling! The handeling will either be >M3 or <M3, but >C63. This is all just a guess of course. In the end it comes down to the price of the car. If it's M3 price then I would probably pick it over the M3. If it goes to like 80,000 range then that's too much.
So in the end... Will it get your pick over the M3? What you guys think will the price be? I found this in an article, "expect the RS5 to wade in with a £53,000 price tag, in line with BMW’s £50,625 M3." So about how much will it be in the US? Are Audi cars reliable? Because I heard couple people said that Audi cars aren't that reliable. Well here it is. Last edited by eNCore; 07-13-2008 at 05:48 PM.. |

Well, the C63 actually has 451 hp... haha. But this car looks so much better both inside and out that i think i can forego the 1 hp deficit in favor of the Audi.

There are very few years that you can't get a better car by waiting until the "next year". What I would do is decide when I want a new car and then buy the best car available then. If you do wait, even if the RS5 sucks in another year I'm certain there will be an even "better" car. Eventually you will buy one and when you do you will be happy.

The M3 will still accelerate faster....
Quattro eats the power. Look at the current RS4, it is owned by every car in the M5board field runs. Unless Audi changes the power suckage from Quattro, the new RS5 will suffer the same fate.

The RS5 sure is good looking...but like all Audis its HEAVY....so it needs big power to overcome all that weight and its weight balance sucks with almost 60% on the nose of the car....so when pushed to the limit it will understeer all day

That all depends on power output, torque output and weight, all of which are not known and everything to date is just speculation. Yes 4WD suffers more power loss but you can't just make a generalisation that because the next RS5 is 4WD it won't accelerate faster...I mean my old Subaru STI Spec C with 320HP at the wheels (~2950lbs kurb weight) was only marginally slower from 60-250km/hr than an M6...

Not speculation on the current RS4.... If Audi doesn't fix their drivetrain the power is going to create nice heat and noise in the RS5

It's only something that seems to occur in the US tests and at the M5Board events. Else where the RS4 and quattro in general perform equally as well as any rwd car. The two cars RS5 and M3 may be closely priced in Europe and the UK but in the US I doubt the RS5 will be that near the M3 price. You will need to really want one to justify the extra dollars required. And at this early stage I couldn't say that the RS5 will be that much of an improvement over the M3, if they produce something closer to the R8 then it will comfortably be better but if it's closer to the RS6 then it would be too close to call. |

I'd be quite interested to see how this turns out. If they make it too good then there would be no reason to buy an R8.

Let me guess: No? Why would they rig races and destroy their credibility?

I didn't realise that the RS4 weighed so much more than in the rest of the world. Is it know what the M3 weighs in at compared to else where, surely it too weighs a similar amount more? As for the amount of transmission lose that Quattro has over rwd, well it's understandable to expect some additional lose but wouldn't agree that it doubles that of rwd or even close to that. It's just trickier to figure an awd car than a rwd car for the simple reason that the power is constantly shifting and while this is happening there will be a drop off at the wheels. I would guess that if the M3 loses 8~10% then expect 12~15% for Quattro. |

Audi's are heavy and have drivetrain losses due to quattro. Looks pretty good. Ive seen a few s5's on the road. They dont really stand out. Theyre decent looking but they blend in with everything else.

This is a speculative thread to begin with; what did you expect?

Owners drive their own cars in those videos. There are thousands of people willing to spend tons of money on sports cars but don't really know how to drive them fast even on a straight line--not talking pro drag race performance or anything...

We're talking about tenths of a second differences here, not really discernable in day-to-day drive. I don't think it's unfair to say that the RS4 and the M3 are comparable.

Great find....I knew that the video on M5board wa kind of fishy....E92 M3 is quick and it will beat an RS4 in a straight line, but its not that quick to beat a RS4 by a bus length
