X8 Discussion Thread

According to this thread here:

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901686

... the G09 X8 is unofficially "confirmed" to "exist outside car journos' dreams." The Bimmerpost homepage has this picture of a pre-concept X8 rendering.

Like other even-numbered X models, it appears to be a "coupe" version of the X7. Because there's no dedicated X8 forum here, probably best to discuss it here in the X7 forum.

Me, I'd be VERY interested in this model, based on this assumption: because of the fastback roofline of the X8, I think it'd be unlikely for the X8 to have a 3rd row. (not enough headroom where the 3rd row would be, although in that rendering I think I see a 3rd row headrest, left over from the X7) I'm really disappointed that BMW made the X7 as just an X5-L model, putting every bit of extra length into the 3rd row. So... IF the assumption is true of no 3rd row in the X8, I would hope BMW would instead use the extra length of the X7/X8 and use it just like the 6-series GT, to give the 2nd row 7-series-like luxurious legroom.

And another news update, this one on the Bimmerpost front page, saying that the X8 is coming.

https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1638684

A partial quote of the section referencing the X8:

Quote:
BMW has finally signed off the brand-new X8 which is mercifully not just a coupe version of the gargantuan X7. Instead, the board gave a green light to an emphatically sporty crossover which will be exclusively offered in M Performance and X8 M forms, and also sport a brawny M Power plug-in-hybrid powertrain that incorporates a 168-hp, 184-lb-ft electric motor and 60-kWh battery pack for zero-emissions driving range of up to 60 miles.

That’s an extraordinary amount of power and would qualify the BMW X8 M as the most powerful production Bimmer in history.

I'd agree with you. I'm not so much into the fastback. But since I'm the kind of person where function is more important than form, I'm all about the interior. If the interior has ultra-luxury for all 4 occupants, including massage and excess legroom for the 2nd row, then I'm all in. No need for a 3rd row. And the driving performance shouldn't be greatly affected by whether it's a traditional SUV back, or X6-like fastback.

Does anyone know if they are looking to incorporating the plugin version for the X7?

I assure you, the BMW X8 will look NOTHING like that! The X8 will go a totally different direction design wise from the X6 & X4. It will adopt a design with a silhouette similar to the Range Rover Sport.

I wonder if it will be more like the Audi Q7 and Q8. Totally different designs.

More updated news:
https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/11/21/b...tandalone-car/

Portions of that story, regarding the X8:
Quote:
We wanted to press more for additional information, but clearly this wasn’t the day where the big scoop was coming our way. What we do know from our own sources is that one of the M standalone cars (hopefully it’s more than one), it will be the BMW X8 M.

The super powerful and luxurious SUV was recently approved for production and we might see it before 2021.The new range-topping BMW X8 M model would be conceived as a competitor to the likes of the Audi RS8, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Under the hood, the X8 M would get the 4.4 liter V8 TwinTurbo unit known from the newly unveiled M8, but we might see a significant power bump to over 700 horsepower. It’s unclear whether that power increased is aided by a hybrid setup in the X8 M.

Still very interested in the G09 X8/XM.

The X8/XM is still supposed to be BMW's first "built from the ground up" vehicle in the modern era, not sharing the CLAR with the other line. Will not be a coupe X7. On my recent PCD, I was at least able to confirm this much with various BMW staff, and that it's still coming. Oh, and that it will be built in Spartanburg. They're tight lipped about everything else.

Most likely to have 2 luxury rows, not 3. Will be a competitor for the Rolls Royce Cullinan, Bentley Bentayga, and Lambourghini Urus.

What I'm seeing, condensed info from the first post of that thread linked above:
  • G09 X8 exists outside car journos' dreams
  • X8 is shaping up to be a halo high performance SUV, with M45e as the entry level model
  • Likely SOP for G09 X8 is July 2022
  • X8 has been renamed to XM. Same model lineup as previously known: a 45e hybrid and two different gas engines
  • EOP: G09 X8 - 11/27

So a four passenger luxury limo SUV? Prices then fully optioned will probably be in the $180k and up range. The question is will it be a full size large SUV platform because I looked seriously at the Bentaga and it’s really a midsize SUV.

Yeah, it's also rumored to be the most expensive production BMW ever made, for those reasons. Unknown what the final size will be, but the few spyshots that have been purported to be of the X8/XM, have shown the vehicle size to be slightly less than the X7. Which I could see, if it's a luxury 2 row models, with no 3rd row.
