New Mercedes E Class

What do you guys think? Looks like they are moving forward to a L3 semi-autonomous status going by the video.

"... without interference from the driver...." says it all. Not for me. I would likely be annoyed by the car trying to take over.

This video worships technology and makes brazen predictions without mentioning costs.

It also has a star on the hood. Mercedes systems have for the last several years been more aggressive than BMW in "assistance" for the driver. At some point MB may offer cars driven by CPO3 androids. Some will speak English -- until another driver cuts them off, at which point German curses will be deployed.

What's the difference between L2 and L3, Tesla is L2 or L3?

I think the G30 does most of this already. All the systems and sensors are there. They just need to improve their logic and coding to get the level 3 standard.

They'd have a red hot go at it if they could figure out how to keep the car in the centre of the lane.

Tesla is a L2 system. G30 is the same. New Audi A8 is the only L3 in the market at the moment.

I don't think it'll be possible with the current hardware setup. As an example steering torque works within a limited radius. However in a L3 car, they'll need to have a broader range.

Odd that Mercedes used a model without the full LCD dash to showcase technology.

I have a 2015 Benz S550 with the safety systems and coming from a Mercedes, my personal preference is with the Mercedes' system. I am not sure what level it is but I prefer the Mercedes blindspot warning and lane change more than my current 5 series system.

But that is just my personal preference.

Well, given how much fun a Mercedes is to drive, they might as well be autonomous...

If I could go back and choose less of those annoying "driver assists" I would. Every time I sit down in my M3 (which has zero such stuff) I breathe a sign of relief.

new Audi A8 L3 in the US is disabled though, I guess the main difference between L2 and L3 is more active steering without driver input? like it will change lane and go around obstacle?

It shifts the responsibility from driver to the car under the conditions it operates. As an example, Audi has no problem in you checking your phone or doing something else without having hands on the steering wheel when the system is operational. Essentially Audi takes the responsibility. That might be why they've disabled it in the US.

The Mercedes E Class is after all, a taxi cab, the European equivalent of the late Ford Crown Victoria. It makes sense for this numb and otherwise unimpressive car to drive itself while performing its main mission as a vehicle for hire.

If I ever change my 520d. I am going for whichever is cheaper to lease between 520d and E200. They are mile munchers anyway. 520d is better to drive but E class engine is probably more reliable and durable

Welcome to 2016.

None of these features are new to the 2019 E-Class. They have been available since the current generation E-Class became available in 2016. The only updates for 2019 are new engines and some new colors/trim.

I was just going to ask this! Aside from the driver assistance features, this looks like the same E Class I've been driving and hating since 2016 when I have to have a courtesy car from Enterprise.

I think the car is pretty much the same but some of the tech is new or updated. Can't fault the marketing team for presenting it this way

You are not the only person hating it. A friend of mine that had an E class as a courtesy car when his F30 was written off complained bitterly of poor driving dynamics until he bought another F30
