What a efffff'in morning I've had. Insult to injury BMW didn't have any loaners so they sent me to enterprise. Disappointment is a understatement

Luckily I was able to close the cover because it was open when the explosion happened. Glass all over me.

There have been many reports of sunroofs exploding on all kinds of car, especially the big panoramic roofs.

Same thing happened to my wife's Mercedes.

This is more common on the Mercs with Pano roof.

There's a recall on some models but not others and none in Canada.

Those muthafukas blamed the wrap. I'm good with my S/A and he said go though insurance. I have a low deductible so I'm doing that. Such bullshit to blame the wrap around the felt not letting cold vs heat expansion... think he said the total job was $2,400, I hope they do almost perfect job n a noob doesn't fuk up my headliner

I'll tell ya'll what a fukin Experience that was, on the turnpike doing about 70ish and a explosion sound, heavy glass hitting me, the amount of air with in seconds then the quick reactions to then the anger switches to being let down to wanting to kill someone. . Lol. I can keep going, I pray no one goes through this.

BEST PART: I started my drive down Rt17 having fun with a 17-19 M5 &. 15ish 4Door M3. 3 alpine white assholes racing down rt17 NJ lol. If you guys read this I'm the 540 keeping up lol with my secret mods lol

This is why I don't mess with sunroofs even though it seems like a 50:50 of it being fine for the life of the vehicle or breaking like this.

I'd probably blame the wrap too judging by the pic. Looks like your wrap installer trimmed around the secondary glass seal rather than the correct primary roof panel opening seal.

In Australia it is illegal to tint the roof, no legit tinter would do it as its known that doing so can cause the roof to explode. The only people that have it done here are people who by the tint and do it themselves..

I have tinted every car I have ever owned. (I don't like driving around in a fish bowl).


Every time I take a new car into be tinted I ask them to do the roof. Every time I ask the tinting bloke tells me they are not able to tint a roof and besides, it can cause the roof to blow.


Some manufacturers have a nice out of the factory dark glass in the roof ( I like those) some manufacturers its almost perfectly clear (hate those)

why dont you contact BMW north america then? Sadly they may say the same as you tampered with the roof or had it wrapped. Honestly though as others mentioned it does look like it may have played a part and your timing considering its winter seems to align with the probability of it being the wrap.

Driving on the highway. My wife said that it felt like something heavy landed on the roof but now i've seen this it must be bad production.

Glad our insurance covered it up otherwise we had to pay 1.700 euro's
