Winter wheels questions.

Apologies as I know this has been done a million times but I’ve never really paid attention and this year am really thinking about getting some ie ordering tonight! Frost etc coming soon and my 275 rears are just going to struggle and cause me no end of stationary stress lol.

So, thinking about a set of 18s which run 225s all the way round. Presume this is the norm? And for those that buy winter wheels, what about RFTs? Having ditched RFTs on the bigger size wheels I currently run, do people go back to RFTs for winter wheels or still stay clear? I would think the 18s wouldn’t be too uncomfortable with RFTs?

Thanks for comments and advice in advance.

Depends how much you want to spend, I found the most cost effective without having really naff looking wheels or risking problems witj non OEM was to buy a set of used 400M's, sell the tyres and buy some new non rft winter tyres.

225s on 18s all round is fairly reasonable. More powerful sdrive cars might find traction is sometimes an issue, but going square does allow for useful rotating of fronts and rears which can mean getting one set of tyres to last the full duration of ownership for most folk, assuming 3-4 winters.

18 inch runflats aren't bad, but they're still more expensive than non run flats. However, if there is a time you really don't want to be faffing with a flat it has to be November through to March!

I have 400M''s with non-runflat winter tyres Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4, 225 all round on staggered wheels. (8j front and 8.5j rear) I bought one of these to put in the boot.

400M on mine. Staggered rims but 225 all round.

Went to vredestein wintrac pro and they are excellent so far.

Had a few inches of snow a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely fine.

I started with 225s all round on my 440i. This while hilarious at times wasn't particularly relaxing while driving. The ease with which I broke traction was slightly disconcerting at times.

I replaced them with 225 front 255 rear Vredestein Wintrac Extremes on 19s. These have proven to be outstanding tyres.

Thanks for all your comments.

So 255 rear with the right tyre still works? Was worried it would still be too wide but if people are getting that to work then I’d be happy to go down that route. Can’t really imaging mine on 225 winter tyres getting me anywhere anyway lol!!

Yes 255's on the rear is better on high powered cars, especially in the UK where we get little snow.

I've got 225s all roundon 18s. Pirelli Sottozero. Heading into the 4th winter with this setup now.

Grip on winters is astonishing.

I’ve got the same but this is my first winter on them, having been properly stuck last year! I have them on 405M 18” wheels and think they look great. Traction isn’t anywhere near what my PS4’s give (no surprise) and it’s very easy to spring up a rear inside wheel when coming out of a junction. Looking forward to the difference in the snow though.
