Waze Alerts using iDrive
My ride is in the shop for the sideswipe repairs (video was posted of that) and I wanted to help a member here that wants to hear the voice alerts from Waze without using CarPlay. Because I don't have my X3 available to look at the configuration, does anyone here have insight on the proper iPhone/iDrive configuration to have the audio alerts come up using the iDrive system?

I see this post has a lot of views and no responses. I believe that's because the question as written is confusing.
Are you asking for help with the setup to hear the Waze alerts through the car speakers when the phone is connected to the car via bluetooth?

I can't get my Waze to give me audio alerts - "police", "car in breakdown lane", etc. If I have CarPlay - I get only visual alerts on the idrive screen. If I switch to BMW system (drop CarPlay) and run the Waze app only on the iPhone, again I get no AUDIO notifications via the iPhone or the cars speakers. Can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Either way I have the iPhone paired to the car for telephone. THANKS! |

So, I was able to do this yesterday. I switched the telephone mode to "Apple CarPlay", and then opened the Waze app in the CarPlay window. In the Waze application, I clicked on Notifications, and made sure to enable audio alerts. Voila, I was receiving the audio guidance, and the alerts through the BMW speakers. Hope that helps.

Full disclosure: I don’t yet have possession of my G01 so take this for what it is worth.
I suspect that you need to be listening to the Bluetooth source for music/audio to hear those alerts. The Waze app is coding the alerts to be broadcast on the phone. The phone then needs to communicate that sound to the car. Normally, this is done inside the CarPlay connection and you get the alerts. If you aren’t connected via CarPlay then the only other way to get that sound is via Bluetooth (or possibly a USB cord). So your audio source would need to be active for Bluetooth from the phone. If you are listening to the radio, CD or whatever then you won’t get these notices. At least, that is how it works on my other vehicles. Hope that helps. |

I don't believe you can switch back and forth between CarPlay and iDrive without changing settings inside of Waze, but have not confirmed this. If you go into the Sound & Voice setting in Waze, you will see a few choices at the bottom under Advanced. In order to hear the alerts over BT, you need to select "Play as Bluetooth phone call". I believe you can also change this by clicking on the speaker icon on the main Waze screen. Make sure that sound is ON, and that the "Listening On" selection is your car's BT. I think that's the secret sauce.

ah.....getting closer, THANKS!
when I set Waze "play as bluetooth phone call" - YES, I got audio though car speaker (navigation directions so I assume alerts also), BUT every time an audio signal - the cars display brought up a phone call with my my #, it doesn't dial and I can live with that if thats the way it has to be. Haven't found the "listening on" yet. Thanks (I cut out my phone number - to protect the innocent) Last edited by kevinkay; 11-15-2018 at 06:08 PM.. |

The point was to hear Waze voice alerts with the regular Bluetooth / iDrive not CarPlay. Some of us are not in love with CarPlay.

Sorry, I missed that point. If that's the case....I think you might be out of luck.
Reason being, I believe that BMW changed the inherent behavior of the iDrive interface for those using iPhones when they integrated with CarPlay. I've noticed that my previous F33 (non-CarPlay) iDrive interface worked with my iPhone much better than the non-CarPlay interface works on the G01.

I think if you don’t like CarPlay then you can disable that in the option menu for how the phone connects. Just leave it as a Bluetooth connection only and it should work the old way.

Isn't there also an option to not run Bluetooth Audio from the phone, in the iDrive phone connection settings (next to where CarPlay or not CarPlay can be ticked off)? If combining that with Waze settings NOT to run over bluetooth call, then it should be played in the Phone speaker, which perhaps can be useful if you like me have your phone in a holder close to you?
That works in my current F31 at least, with most iPhone apps. |

So on carplay you dont get AUDIO alerts for "police", "object on road", "car in breakdown lane", etc. ?? I like running Waze in the background just for alerts and not for navigation. Went back to CarPlay today after changing the sound output to -like a bluetooth phone call and did not get audio alerts and CarPlay changed the output to default

I'm also not getting any Waze audio notifications for alerts (speed traps, obstacles, police, etc) while my IOS device is connection to my car through CarPlay. The issue is occurring when I'm NOT in navigation/directions mode on Waze. If I start the Waze navigation (by setting a destination) I do get all notifications (directions and alerts). I was wondering if anyone knew exactly what shoptb meant by ...I clicked on Notifications... because I don't think I have an icon for notifications. Thanks. |

A lot has changed, in both Carplay and the Waze app itself since this post. I'll try to test this setup again (getting Waze alerts without using navigation) to let you know what I have on my end. -Brad

I have fooled around with setting extensively. I can not figure it out, I don't get audio alerts (police, pothole, etc) without a WAZE destination and even with a destination sometimes it only gives the visual alert. AND every once in a while I will get an audio alert without a destination. I am staring to think its based on how many others have reported and only audio after a majority reporting??
The visual reports are given with enough advance but if you changed the screen (made a phone call) things can pop up quick! |

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I've ran some more tests today and it looks like it's not only Waze that is affected by this but the entire IOS notifications system. I'm not getting any audio notifications (messages, whatsapp, mail, etc). I only get a visual popup on the CarPlay display. (I did check to make sure that DND is not enabled and that my phone is not on silent) In the meantime I found more users reporting the same issue and for some of them the fix was to turn the volume knob at the exact time the notification popup is displayed. This doesn't work in my case. Even with the popup showing I can only control the entertainment volume. This can be an intentional feature implemented by Apple or BMW but considering that the behaviour is not identical for every user I'm thinking it's either a setting that I'm missing or a bug (my setup is iDrive 6 and an IOS 14.3 device). |

Sorry for bringing such an old thread but I think it might be worth it to vote this bug on waze discussion forums to increase visibility by devs:
BUG: BMW with idrive 6 does not play waze audio alerts if no destination /navigation is set https://www.waze.com/discuss/t/no-al...n-carplay/1365 |
