active kidney's

What's the point of having the door open and close on the kidneys? If the louvers broke closed, would the car overheat?

Better aerodynamics when they are closed. Part of the reason X3 has astounding .29 coefficient of drag.

“Helps” with gas mileage. Personally rather they be open for more cooling effect on radiator.

I'm still amazed how far the car will coast when I'm in ECO mode. At time, I almost treat it like a game. lol.

If they need to be open, they will open. The engine has an optimum operating temperature spectrum, so the slats open and close depending on ambient conditions and heat sensor readings.

That has a lot to do with the transmission and not so much the kidneys.

If they stick closed the lower grill will likely let enough air in so it won't overheat.

Did you just brainstorm this? Not that it isn't creative, but I'd be curious if this was ever imagined by the engineers in München.

Is it?
I thought they all do?
Because there is an aftermarket dual slat planned to be made. But the active grill will ruin the fitment.

There's still enough airflow from below to keep the car limping at lower power. The electric water pump is a bigger concern, IMHO.

There are actually two water pumps, when mechanically driven, the other electric - as you noted.

Also interesting, this car doesn't have your historic thermostat.. more of a temperature router. Electronically controlled valve system that routes coolant depending on need.

Actually I think the 30is and 40is all do as standard. Not sure of the other models.

Only seen mine open one time. Never owned a car that radiates heat for so many hours after parked in the garage.

It was designed that way for a reason.
