How many keys??

Hi all,

Today I picked up my G31. I got one standard remote and display key. Am I correct in thinking, I should have got 2 standard keys and 1 display key??

Thanks.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think I read in another thread that BMW recently stopped giving the 2nd standard key if you get the display key. I.e. the display key replaces a standard key rather than adding to your set.

Hi kitster,

since MY19 you only get one display key, standard remote and an emergency key.
Until MY18 you got two standard remote keys and one display key...

Greetings

Nooooooooooooooo

Oh crapper! I've got the first option "one display key, standard remote and an emergency key". I've pinged the dealer, I guess I know what the reply will be.

Thanks anyway.

Reply from dealer:

From last year vehicles with the display key only came with:
  • Remote Key
  • Display Key
  • Skeleton Key

My dealer told me last week that a non-display key fob costs around £350.

Why such a big concern for an extra key anyway?

I guess for people that car share with a spouse, the extra key means each driver can have their own key, plus a spare just in case.

My car came with display key +2 in 2017, but when my car was stolen a few months ago and new keys had to be ordered, I got a new display key +1 as per the changes.

Suits me fine as the thieves actually stole my car by breaking in to the house and finding the spare, so now I do not want spares in the house - I have left mine at a relative's house in a safe place. Inconvenient as hell if I ever need it, but loosing a key is not a common occurrence for me.

The novelty with the display key wore off after six months. It was great showing it off to friends and family, in the end being practical over ruled looking good. The display key was a nightmare to put in my trouser pockets - especially slim fit jeans! Needed charging up every few days in the wireless charger, and its a snug fit in that compartment.

Really sorry to hear your house was broken into and car stollen. Sounds like you had the car recovered. Not a nice thing to happen.

Thanks, yeah it happened in August. I actually got it back using the Connected app to show me the last parked location. I went to where it was last located and the car was sitting there, so I took it back (they stole my spare but I had my main key) and the police came and did forensics etc before going in for repair.

All fixed now and returned in brand new condition (which is actually better than when it was stolen)

Almost a year in and I still keep my display key as the main key. The attention it gets is crazy when I do have it out, even though it is rare. Usually I leave it in the inside suit pocket or jacket pocket and forget about it until the end of the day.

I used it last night. Got to say I really didn't like the unlock button placement, coupled with the slippery shape! I think I'll be going back to the standard key.

But the people who see it, love it.

Agree on button placements. But I have comfort access, so rarely use the buttons.

I get about 3 weeks between charges, and i'm in an out the car multiple times per day. In fact, in the 13 months I've had it, I don't think I have charged it more than 12 times.

Pretty much sums up my experience. I've never charged it outside the car either.
