DIY oil change anyone

Do we have members doing their oil changes, and if yes, is there a thread with part numbers for the filter element and gaskets, if any? I don't seem to be able to find one.

I did the first oil change around 5k on my old m40i.

Don't have part numbers handy but I will tell you that getting the filter out housing is a pain, it is far in the back and requires 32mm socket (1-1/4").

I would probably not do it again on the b58.

For reference the filter / oil on e90 is a piece of cake

You might have better luck in the First or Second Gen X3 forums. The oil changes are covered under the included maintenance for the first 3 years, so I'm letting BMW handle it.

I did mine on my 18M40i. As mentioned, a 1 1/4" socket, swivel and extension worked on my car. Not sure who designed the placement of the oil filter but access is a little difficult. Otherwise, it's a normal oil change procedure. I had the BMW dealer throw in a couple oil filters when closing the deal so I just used BMW parts.

I haven't had it enough to change oil in it yet, but have been looking into this. My engine, per MANN is a B46B0O0. And for BMW: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...87#11428596283

So far I've found for the oil;
BMW # 11428575211
Mann # HU6014Z

Trying to cross reference for others

OH: Fram says it # CH11217

Can you get a torque wrench in there?

And no dipstick so we will go by volume only?
Haven't crawled under yet to check out the drain plug

just thinking ahead, 3 years goes by fast......

I planned to do an early change but it was a PITA to get info - I called dealers to find out the correct oil and, at least at that time, no one seemed to know. Here's what I found;

Yes to the torque wrench. You will need a little swivel extension to make your life easier. I will admit that I went with the classic this feels tight enough.

Because the car was so new I didn't want to lean over the side too Much in fear of damage.

On the m40i the engine is tucked in nicely away from the front so I couldn't reach standing at ground level in front the car:

The oil plug underneath was not hard to find. Usual spot / usual cover .

I don't have a lift at home .

That's phenomenal, thanks a lot!

Did you find the specification or part number for the "sealing ring"? It goes under the bolt of the drain.

Just ask the parts counter for the cooper washers that fit your bolt. I usually buy 10 or so at a time and keep them in the toolbox

How am I supposed to measure the bolt without unscrewing it? I cannot unscrew it until I have the washer, and I cannot drive the car to the store once I have it out to measure. I suppose I could start this in the morning, then order washers overnight with Amazon Prime, but that sounds a little risky.

Buy the mann filter, it comes with the crush washer and rubber oil filter housing gasket. If you search on here I posted instructions on doing the oil change a few months ago.

The oil drain plug is an M12x1.5x16 so you need a 12mm washer. For what it is worth, I reuse crush washers all the time and have yet to have a drop of oil leak.

Here is a link to the drain plug.

You go to the parts counter and tell them what car you own and if need give them the VIN.

And if you really think you're going save that much buying then from Amazon, etc. Yes, unscrew it put your finger over the hole, measure it then put it back together and top off the oil. The washers are good for 2-3 uses if you don't crush the hell out of them but I'm not that cheap and use a new one considering what will happen if I loose the oil in my engine.
