Who really knows the electronics in our vehicles ?

The manufactures have installed a tracking device of the owners driving habits that is tractable after accidents. Such as speed, braking, seat belt usage, acceleration, deceleration, turn signal activated or not and more.

This can be pulled up after and accident for investigation purposes or whenever they get their hands on the vehicle. The police can access this also of they get the vehicle to check.

Does anyone know where this is stored .. and if it's possible to deactivate it ? I’ve spent sometime trying to find out and as of now, failed to find. Toyota had claims against them for the gas pedal sticking claims a few years ago, and many claims were denied because they accessed the car and pull this info up, plus gave the findings to the police and insurance companies.

This is way too much of a Big Brother item and I’d like to disable this tattle tale device.

Everything you do is logged by the computers on the vehicle, it isn't uploaded anywhere... You would need a scanner in order to access the info.

I say leave it because it just may help your ass out some day. They aren't "watching" you per se.

Well, at least it won't be accessible remotely.
I could careless about it, because we gave up our souls to the big corporations already.
Unless if you are still in the age of pen n paper with rotary analog phone.

Yes, I still believe in paper and pencil, and a book feels better than an iPad. But just not into this document everything in every persons life. I do like and want 'some' privacy.

This is on the verge of paranoia.

If you make phone calls, use a credit card, or even browse the web, you are "giving up" far more information than your car will ever give. And all that information is phished from you without your control or say so.

At least this information is only used on a need to know basis. If the information is never needed because of an accident, then nobody will ever see it. It's not stored somewhere that someone can just peruse at their leisure. And it just might save you money or from a lawsuit one day.

It's also helped in lawsuits against car manufacturers. if that data shows a brake pedal fails, company is a fault. It's not a his word against theirs scenario.

I see I'm sorry I asked in the first place.

Wait until you get hit with Identity Thief .. then come back saying how you feel.

Guess I'm failing to see how they can "steal your identity" by how you drive...

They can't for this circumstance.

But with this on or not, it was not needed in the past decades, and it isn't needed to make the car go faster, better mpg's or more importantly .. any safer. And it only adds to the cost. Personally I feel the buyer should have a choice of opt-in or opt-out.

This has been posted over on the M2 Forum. I've not looked at my M2 Manual to see if it's true. If it's on the M2, I wouldn't be surprised if it's on the X3 as well.

I myself like it because I have been in 3 accidents in my 20 years of driving. Each time the other drivers tried blaming me... Two of them went on for weeks until their stories were changing and mine stayed the same. It's all down to he said/she said type situation. These logs are especially useful in fatality type accidents. If I were in an accident that killed someone, I want to make damn sure I've got everything going for me to prevent me from getting a manslaughter charge and thrown in prison. If the system is going to work against you, then maybe you shouldn't be driving.

And if these boxes can help car manufactures to make safer cars, why not let them have the data?
Of course the paranoid version of me might think that they use the data in an unethical way, but since it's not (yet?) available remotely, we should be able to feel safe.

The black box was pushed to be installed in vehicles not by the auto industry but by the insurance industry via the Feds to help in claims and their losses. The auto industry jumped in later because they can pull info in hope to help them in lawsuits ... and via the buyers cost when buying. Not for driver safety.

Auto industry drive for safety was due to all the bad prior designs, lawsuits, bad PR, lower sales, lower profit and federal fines over this.

I can see the pro's and Con's on this one!
It could help, but it could incriminate if you haven't been strictly complying with the law .......

The facts still are, if you drive each day, the 'average' driver nation wide violates the law 35 times each day. (per the insurance industry) The problems are one mile over the posted speed limit, what they call the California stop and go, turning at stop sign intersections without totally stopping and more. Minor violations, but still violations per the law and documented in the data. I could care less of this, but can be used against you in an accident. I've been driving for over 50 years and have had 2 accidents, where I was listed as not at fault. But I have done all the minor mistakes mentioned. Human beings are just human beings. I only wanted the opt-in instead of having it shoved up my a** as it has, and pay for it on top of it.
