OEM Trailer hitch parts
Hi Guys,
ever since I purchased my m40i, I regret I did not buy this car with a trailer hitch that can be order from factory. I was doing some digging, and looks like all the parts can be ordered separately to incorporate it. I never liked the option of purchasing an aftermarket hitch, since the OE is integrated with the iDrive system. Here is a link from parts fiche. My only question is, would I have to buy anything "wiring wise" like a connector and is the non tow package pre wired or is there splicing required? https://www.myonlinebmwparts.com/v-2...omponents-rear |

That is something I had looked into myself but I don’t know that anyone had a solid answer on the wiring portion of the retrofit. I ended up adding and after market hitch to my first x3 and then ordered my replacement with the factory hitch. You are correct, the inter grated wiring does provide for extra features like disabling the rear sensors, disabling blind spot and deactivation of remote trunk activation. It also has a hitch zoom mode when reversing but that was easily coded to add the feature.

https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRINT/4707/?CenterId=32652 These are the parts for my X4M40i which should be similar if not the same... https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/4...CenterId=32652 what's weird is when used Google to find the page it brought up this, which is not the hidden hitch? https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/3...CenterId=32652 https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRINT/3027/?CenterId=32652 |

I can say that without a doubt I bought the hitch first and the X3 was just attached to it.
Sounds weird...but, as soon as I heard it had a hitch I moved from the MDX and Pilot. The day I bought I called the BMW service first. I asked the cost of adding the hitch. I was quoted 10 hrs of labor plus parts. I knew right then that I had to get factory. Two choices...one white and one Gunmetal gray. I bought the gray. Pulled a trailer the next weekend. The only negative...it will not let you coast in ECO! I love that function...not when pulling a trailer though! Paul |

I was told by a parts person at a bmw dealership that this part (electrical tow connector) is not available yet as a separate part #
I even called BMW relations 1800 number, and they refereed me back to the dealership. LOL I may just yank it out of an x3 with tow package sitting on their lot (JK) |

I think you also need to add a module?
71606884358 Control unit for trailer hitch I am not big on "after market", but this Stealth is hidden- no change to your bumper, and your "kick" to open the back lift still works (reportedly). https://stealthhitches.com/products/...5-2018-present (opening the link, its G01) |

bumper cover for OEM hitch?
Hi folks, so my 2019 M40i has factory tow hitch. Not an option I really needed but hey in stock car, and killer deal in Tulsa.
That said, visually I do not prefer the look. Some companies go to great pains to design a cover for the whole thing. I imagine there will be or is one. Any thoughts or leads on this. thanks J |

I considered this too but retrofitting the stock hitch is stupid expensive compared to getting it from the factory. You also have to consider painting the bumper cover on top of parts and labor, right?
I self-installed a Stealth Hitch and am very happy with it. FWIW this install required splicing wires. Check out the stealth hitch dedicated thread for more info. edit: I was also able to add the iDrive towing camera option through BimmerCode, which I believe is the only relevant iDrive integration? I guess I am mistaken. When I looked into it a month ago I was under the impression that the whole bumper cover would need to be replaced not just lower portion.
