G01 rear cargo floor shock retrofit

To my dismay, the 2019 models do not have the shock to hold up the floor in the cargo areas. Instead, it has a Velcro strap. I felt like this was pretty cheap of BMW to remove the feature. Another thread talked about this and if it was possible to retrofit the 2018 shock. Since I just swapped my 18 for a 19 I had enough time with both vehicles to swap out the rear cargo floors. The hardest part was adding a wing nut to the ball stud for the shock since, surprisingly, bmw stopped welding in the nut the stud would normally thread into. Luckily, there is a small cut out you can get a finger through to attach a wing nut. Once that was done, it was smooth sailing. All you really need for the conversion is the floor with shock and the ball stud. The cargo storage area carpet doesn’t have the hole for the stud but could be easily cut out to accommodate. See pictures below on how to make the conversion.

Thank you for the detailed instructions. My 2019 is in production this week but I'm not sure I want to go through all this to get this functionality. Shame on BMW for this downgrade!!

Guess they thought we wouldn't notice the strut missing. Wrong.

Mine doesn't even have the 50 cent strap that the 19's are supposed to come with. Really cheap. But no doubt some slacker on the assembly line was to busy smoking a doobie to bother installing the strap.

I did the honorable thing and cut a piece of PVC pipe to hold open the lid on the very rare time I need to get at something in the storage area.

Bob,

You deserve at least a strap. Take it in for service and show them it is missing. Although they may have removed it for weight savings on the performance models. 😉

This the set up for the boot floor without 'Extended Storage' option.
In my opinion, this now works better than the Extended Storage floor, as it is narrower and the fold out hook doesn't reach!!

I know the removal of the strut is a minor thing, but the result for the extended storage floor is very poor and not what I'd expect from a premium brand ....

I agree, premium brand shouldn't do such a cost cuting things and changes after the release of the vehicle. People are expecting to have the strut - that's how it says in every advert.

The picture was mainly for those, who says they don't have any hook for the floor now. I didn't now (stupid me, it's obvious now), that the floor with extended storage is actually narrower

My 2019 GO1 was built in July 2018 and it came with the shock.
But I do like the mod you came up with looks great.

I was told all 2019 s30i's have it up till August production. Just like the other X3's for the 2018 model year. Then when the entire line of 2019 models started production, that's when they deleted the strut thinking we wouldn't notice.

They were making 2019 models of the s30i since spring, in parallel with 2018 models of the x30i and M40i. The "current" 2019 models (late July prodution and beyond) don't have the shock anymore.

So cheap of them to delete the strut.

Then it must be after the 27th, that is what they quoted as my build date.

Would anyone happen to know the parts you need to order for this? I’d like to do this but would have to buy them.

From my original post, you’ll need the floor with shock (it’s glued on), the ball stud mount and you can either cut a small hole in the carpeted storage area you have or replace that as well.

That sounds about right based on the VINs and build dates folks were posting in the 2019 build sticky thread when 2019 M40i production started. You probably have one of the very last X3's built during the previous model year cycle.

Owners in UK are also saying they have no strut, do you know what model it was?

Last cars that had strut would have been built in July, they take around 6-8 weeks to reach UK and maybe if dealer put it in as a stock car it wouldn't have been registered straight away, so possibly a older car than it looks maybe?

My 2019 X3 M40i delivered last week in the UK has no boot strut.
Just a Velcro loop which kinda lines up with the curry hook on the right of the boot.

Just ordered an X3 last week, and when I asked my sales assistant if there were any differences between the 2018 and 19 models, he told me there were absolutely no differences (I’m in the Netherlands) could this be correct for NL or is he simply ill-informed? Don’t really care about the strut etc but would be nice to know
