F90 M5 Engine Recall - Full Engine Replacement?!

I'm a proud new member of the M family! I've been lurking here since I put my M on order, but never had anything interesting to add to the conversation until I took it in for the break-in service...

The dealership just called to say that it was almost done, but they just found a recall on it that calls for a full engine replacement (yes, I triple checked with him that was correct because I couldn't believe it). The guy at the dealership didn't have any details beyond that - he isn't sure if he is allowed to release the car to me (safety recall) while waiting for parts or how long it could be until they have a replacement engine.

He said the recall was #B111518. Has anyone heard of this? I tried to look up that recall number online and came up empty handed.
For reference of my spot in the production line - VIN ending in 4006

Will update as I get more details.

Update:
I called BMW North America myself - when they looked up my VIN they put me on a very long hold and then said that there was something noted on my car, but refused to give any more details. She said I need to talk to the dealership.
The service manager at the dealership told me that the recall is only on 12 VINs in North America and he is still looking waiting on his rep to give him more information.

Here's to hoping your not one of the other 11!

I'll update when I find out more from my dealer.

Something smells fishy about that! Maybe you misunderstood something? Or maybe they damaged the car during service and are trying to cover it up?

Just got the bulletin from the dealership. They offered no further details beyond what is in here. Still waiting on a response from Germany...

I just called bmw USA to check on my 2019 because it was built in between those dates .. it started assembly on July 2nd and finished on the 12th... luckily they see nothing on my car!! I guess I bit the bullet on that one!! I’m scheduled for the first service tomorrow so I’ll see if it’s true

Engine replacement!!! So what happens when you try to trade this car in at a BMW center and they pull history on the service records and see this blasphemy. If Im the used car manager taking your car in on trade Im going to hit that car hard for that process.

Can you lemon it and get a replacement? Considering it only had its first service and it needs a major fix and hurts resale value?

My '18 fell in the time frame, so I called the 844-443-6487 number and spoke to the genius (Jacob). He assured me there was no recall information associated with my car.

I couldn't bear the thought of surgery on my 10 week old baby.

This is nuts ... my car went into production on the 24th of July so I assume I'm OK but this is not your run of the mill recall.

I just called the Genius number regarding mine (a 2019 that was produced during this period). I was told "no open recall" for mine.

Not sure if this is a recall or just a TSB, so I don't know if this means that I don't need to worry about it. I wish they listed the VINs on the TSB...

That is scary shit. BWM has to do better than this for the price people pay for these cars! Come on BMW!

Did you read the whole thread? He actually posted the TSB from BMW.
Reading is Fundamental.

Did they say when you'll get an update? I'd be doing everything I could to get out of this deal and give the car back. If they replace the engine, it'll crush your resale value.

I had to trade-in a previous M6 to Carmax far below market value because I had to have an engine replaced, and they were the only ones that didn't catch it. And I traded it in the day after I picked it up from its engine replacement surgery...

What I would like to know is how BMW determines that there are only 12 cars affected by this? How do they know there isn’t more out there that were built around the same time?

Good question. We can only speculate, but they obviously keep detailed records of everything.

By the way, after asking the BMW "Genius" I also asked my dealer to look it up, and my car is not among those affected even though it was made during that period. Phew...
