M340i and 330i have different kidney grills

It looks like the kidney grills will be different on the m340i than on the 330i.. the m340i has that honeycomb and the 330i has the traditional slots (which I much prefer) so far aesthetically I'm liking the 330i msport rather than the m340i.. (the kidney's, exhaust, and front bumper)

Agreed, first time a less expensive 3-er since 318/325/328/330 looks better than its more expensive more powerful engine equipped brother.

If I throw the lsd on the 330i, I'd be willing to sacrifice the power over looks in this case.. hate the exhaust on the m340i, doesn't look sporty, they should've done something similar to a quad exhaust, I actually like the fogs on the 330i, and prefer the grill also..

Have you seen both in person? I would guess not. I think the m340i looks a lot better than the 330. But I have only seen pictures.

It's nice to see them do something a bit different within their design language.

I’m the opposite. I’d take it being sporty even IF it may indeed look less sporty. Don’t think it will be even IF.

They're subtle changes from what I've seen in pic's, with the exhaust being the most prominent change which I can do without, I personally like the round tips myself and the fogs to me add a certain element to the front, just my opinion. I can also live without the extra horsepower on the 340 and if the 330 meets all my expectations..

it's possible that 340's will also be available in non-M or Sport/Luxury versions, just like 330's.

The G20 has moved up the exhaust hierarchy a notch or two. The 330i/330d will now get the dual exhaust previously reserved to the 340i. Even the lesser 320i/320d will get the dual exhaust. The versions lower down the lineup (318i/318d...) which previously only had one lone exhaust pipe might now get the single twin exhaust of the previous 330i/330d, or maybe they too will get the same dual exhaust as the higher models, which would mean dual exhaust on the entire regular G20 lineup.

Well they still need to somehow distinguish the top of the line non-M version (M Performance). They can't use the dual round exhausts anymore as those will already be spread over the entire 3er lineup. Nor would they put anything quad exhaust related as that is too M associated (well, possibly two twin square/rectangular exhausts, but that's very AMG). So they are keeping the pipes number at two on the M Performance, and are playing with the remaining factors: different shape (rectangular/trapezoid) and different color (Cerium Grey). Makes sense to me and looks family related to an X3 M40i, an M550i or an M850i.

Wow, thanks for the info!! I totally understand how they have to differentiate between the two models and it makes sense, just wish maybe there was something a bit more sportier maybe oval? I dunno just my opinion.. but just like everything else, you're not gonna please everyone..

Judging by how the X3 is sold, no. It'll strictly be an M Performance model that will only come with the M Sport style body work/accents.

Agreed, I doubt there will be any different "lines" just option choices, mostly what options you will have on the 330i, plus some interior options and/or paint options..

Maybe I am in the minority, but I prefer the dark grey, rectangular exhaust tips on the M340. It's more "manly" than the dual round tips without looking like the bazooka's some ricers put on their cars. The dark finish is a bonus because chrome tips invariably get corroded or covered with soot unless you keep them waxed/polished.

I def agree about the chrome getting dirty, and there are some hideous exhausts out there, esp on jap cars. I do love the m's quad exhaust, doesn't get much better than that!

Oval is a no go as that is Audi's exhaust shape for the RS cars

I really love the trapezoid exhausts. But Hyundai ruined them for me as they've stuck them onto everything

And Mercedes-Benz.

*sigh* it used to be so simple. Remember in the 90s when the Europeans started to get uppity about regulations (whilst also at the same time promoting diesel but nevermind) and BMW and others responded by hiding the tailpipes on cars altogether? Now we have power bazookas that spit flames and noise. Gosh, how we've moved on...

That grill looks weird close-up
and from further away where you only see the chrome it reminds me of Mercedes style grilles

M340i seems to have the trapezoid exhausts..
can it really pull off a sporty look with trapezoidal exhausts?
when I see it I say mini-5

The M340 looks better w/ the m perf parts
however I still think there are errant lines here and there
the black on white kinda looks nice
but I will hold judgement til I see some other colors besides white and blue which I am not a real fan of on this car
I mean does this car look good in red?

It's hard to believe that people who initially wanted an m340i are ready to buy the 4 banger model just over some petty cosmetic preferences. The motor is the heart and soul of the vehicle. The kidney grill, exhaust tips, hofmeister kink, etc are just cosmetic bullshit.

The next time anyone wants to know why bmw seems to be making duller driving cars with each generation, look no further than yourselves.

I'm not sure if we can "fix" the trapezoid exhaust, but the grill could probably be swapped for a different one. So you could probably order a regular 330i grill and fit that in your M340i.

As Scott has mentioned, a full black mesh M Performance grille will also be available for the M340i. The best compromise however would be to have the black mesh grille (get rid of the silly Cerium Grey dotted lines on top of it) while keeping the Cerium Grey grille surround which is the M Performance theme color

From my understanding it won't be possible..
