According to Green Car Reports, Diesel is Officially Dead

It seems that BMW will be favoring Plug-In Hybrids instead of their diesel models. Link to the article below.

"We're putting all our eggs in the PHEV basket," said BMW spokesman Alexander Schmuck.

Damn I am a bit upset. Was looking forward to replacing the 2015 BMW X5d with the newer one and diesel engine. Guess need to look into E-hybrids like the next gen Cayenne as the BMW e hybrid is going to take 1 more year to come which I have no clue why its taking that long

After owning several bmws all with the i6 gas engines and now owning a f15 30d I want to go back to gas i6. It's just much more fun to drive.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/6/17...the-gas-models

This one will allow for approx 40-50 mpgE with charged battery and gas. Not a bad option. My salesman at Porsche says his Panamera E-Hybrid is charged everynight and he only puts gas in it 1x every 2 weeks... Yeah dont ask how he even affords a Panamera lol.

Article has been updated

"UPDATE: BMW has clarified its statement to Green Car Reports in an email. The final decision as to whether or not the BMW X5 diesel variant will come to the U.S. market has not been made. BMW of North America continues to monitor customer preferences and is prepared to adjust the product portfolio accordingly."

If you watch the 1st. episode of the new Netflix series "Dirty Money" about VW's diesel debacle you might not want a diesel. It's very well done and implicates BMW and MB as well towards the end. Bottom line these engines pollute 400% to 500% more than the manufacturers say. It's worth watching. BMW's decision might very well be related to this since the motors probably don't pass emission regs.

Just curious to ask, where else can you go? All the germans have gotten rid of their diesel vehicles and it seems only Chevy is introducing diesels but only for limited models.

Land Rover and Jaguar still have diesel SUVs. Or go for E-hybrid next generation Cayenne.

Oh yeah I forgot, although I think they're very slow. I think the F-Pace has a 2.0T diesel that takes 9+ seconds to 60, which in my opinion is unacceptable for a $60+ suv. Plus Jag/Land Rover reliability seems to be a huge risk.

It very much depends on how you define "pollute". If NOx is your worry, then yes (although compared to a semi, a locomotive or even a freighter or a cruise ship, a car with NH3-SCR produces practically nothing). If CO2 is the issue, Diesel is better.

The air is thin. In Germany, I could still get two Diesel options for the X5 and four options for the X3. In the USA, as usual, nothing.

The real world numbers were 400% to 500% higher than the test numbers. The numbers given to the govt. by the manufacturers were false. I don't remember the NOX, CO2 numbers. The ECU's were programmed to operate a certain way while on a dyno (if the steering wheel did not move) and totally differently on the road in normal operation so when tested you would get 1 result and on the road completely different results.

Watch the show it was very well done, you sound much more knowledgeable than me about diesels, you'll find it interesting and maybe like me disturbing on a few levels.

Actually, BMW is backtracking here and keeping the diesel option open depending on customers reactions as of this link!

https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/b...scontinuation/

I emailed BMW USA yesterday and told them that I love my 2015 X5d and wont hesitate to get the newer generation one. They make all the X5s here in USA and put those 3.0D in them and sell them in the rest of the world so it should be that hard for them to recertify the newer ones if demand is there. I recommend those who want the new X5 in diesel to email the BMW corporate under corporate request.

Here is the updated news:

I submitted an email through the contact form encouraging them to invest in U.S. diesels compliant with emissions regulations and compatible with upcoming B20 biodiesel blends.

Good to hear that! I also had my dealership prod the regional factory rep to build new generation X5d to replace my 2015 one or I am jumping ship.
