Corvette ZR1 laps the 'Ring in 7:26.4:

Tadge J. Juechter, Corvette's chief engineer, announced this morning that Jim Mero, GM's development engineer, drove the ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4. According to the GMNext blog, the run took place earlier this morning and that conditions were good on the track, with the exception of a strong headwind down the main straight. Mero mentioned that he felt there were a few places where he could have gone faster, although no details were provided about why and where.

Juechter makes it clear that the ZR1 that lapped the 'Ring was instock trim, with the exception of safety and communications equipment. As such, the ZR1 was wearing the same Michelin Pilot Sport 2s found on the production model, the chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs and the unmodified engine was running on pump gas.

The lap began with a rolling start – which falls in line with current industry practices – and the time was confirmed both through an electronic timing system and two hand-held stopwatches. The ZR1 team will be posting a video of their run when they return from Germany and we'll be keeping our eye out for it when it's online the week of July 7th.

Top tip Mason!

According to the regression analysis here:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ssion+analysis

the expected time would have been 7:40. 7:26 is really good if the below specs are correct.

I am assuming 1506 kg and 620 hp for 2.43 kg/hp.

That exceeds the performance of the Carrera GT, which has 620 hp, 1475 kg, and 2.41 kg/hp, with lap time 7:36.

Something tells me that the ZR1 is not going to be a reliable car.

@gbb: Do you ever bother to post anything about BMWs let along the M3.

@Mantis: There is a distinct possibility that the M-DCT car will break the magic 8 minute barrier. With a factory Ace driver it certainly would.

Nope, not one bit. Loving my car, every bit of it and every day.

Clearly there is not comparison between the cars, price, performance or really even genre. My comments were very precisely directed at the two folks and two posts directly above.

As a matter of fact i have. Check out my post on the M3 General forum about Motivemagazine's excellent review on the E93. It's hard for me to post anything about the M3 in here because i'm usually behind any news about the M3, but i post alot of stuff about BMW's and the M3 in particular that i read from here in a Lexus forum, really good ones most of the time. My question is why are you questioning my post but not question the others like the "NSX's ring time" post? Stop bitching and just enjoy your M3. And why is it such a problem for you when you see other cars doing so well, stop hatin and don't be so bitter.

Ehh, not quite a fanboy, but definitely a fan. But i am a fanboy of MB and AMG particularly, but mostly just a huge car enthusiast. I like most cars that are out there, especially high performance cars. The difference of my fanboyism compare to Swamps and others that i see here or should i say mostly that i see here, is that i don't have a problem of other cars being better than Mercedes, and i certainly don't hate on any other cars.

Amazing, done in a bone stock car too. The lap was electronically timed and confirmed with two hand-held stopwatches.

In car video will be released July 7th.

-The timed lap was run with a rolling start, a departure from our previous practice of standing starts. This is more aligned with current industry practice.

-Over the last two weeks, we have been doing our final tuning and testing there before we start ZR1 production cars. This morning (Friday June 27), General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove the Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4.

-Jim commented after the lap that conditions were good except for a strong headwind down the main straight and that the lap was solid, but he felt there were a few places he could have gone faster.

-Despite posting one of the fastest times ever run by a production car, Nürburgring lap times were not an over-riding priority in the development of the ZR1. The truth is, if the only priority was speed at the ring, the car would not be very pleasant to drive on American roads.

I am bored and was just being a smart alec. You did a fine job of asserting your position anyway. I on the other hand believe all performance cars are for the conspicuous consumption folk of whom I am very jealous of.

Look I am not saying you never have posted anything good/positive about BMWs or M3s, it is simply fact that you spend a majority of your time here on this M3 FORUM praising other brands.

I am neither fanboy, nor hater, I too like the majority here have a broad and deep appreciation for all fine automobiles, expecially those that truly peform. You keep on trying to pigeonhole me, time and time again but you always fail.
