N54 Coolant Leak
Whats up guys, I'm having a leak issue with my car and I'm curious to see what opinions you guys may have on where its coming from and how much it may be to repair- parts and labor total cost?
Thanks! pics and video posted hopefully they get posted with no issues https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw...pjRWpneW9zVDNN https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw...NaWDhnb1l6S0hZ https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw...VzSnNPdHVpeVhz https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw...lBY1NYYlB5ZHNN |

Your first picture, you highlighted the rim of the coolant expansion tank.
It’s common for this to crack. You you have white dried coolant sprayed around the tank? It’s hard to tell the engine bay is so dirty. Looks like you have a wet spot on the support and bolt for the tank right? Replace it. Jump on FCP and get the tank, a new cap and it comes with a level sensor. I had mine fail and it was more obvious, was spraying out when hot . I cleaned the whole engine bay to make it easier to spot. |

yeah i'm planning on having the whole engine bay cleaned once I get this resolved. I highlighted the rim of the expansion tank bc when I first saw the problem thats where I saw coolant leaking from.

New expansion tank = $123 New expansion tank cap = $18 1 Gallon of coolant = $23 1 Gallon of distilled water = $5 1-1.5 hour labor at the shop = $60-150 Or you can change the tank yourself because it is fairly easy to do. |

Coulda fixed it yourself for the cost of the new tank. It takes, literally, 5 minutes to swap out that tank - two 10mm bolts, two snap-off hoses, and a single harness connector. About a quart of coolant to top it off once installed.
When looking for coolant leaks, the HIGHEST point on the engine where you see coolant will pretty much always be the source - due to gravity. On rare occasions you might see coolant higher than the leak, it if manages to spray upward, but that is pretty rare. And on the E9X cars, ANY time a plastic part is suspect, you can be about 99% certain it is at fault. The plastic parts on these cars are absolute garbage, compared to the E46. Regards, Ray L. |

Yeah I’m gonna have to try that out one day.
I did go to a private shop but update on the repair Expansion tank and expansion tank hose needed to be replaced so total for labor and parts came out to $265 which I believe isn’t too bad |

Gallon of bmw coolant comes concentrated, so unless he ordered two gallons I don't see how coolant cost that much. |
