Problems with my N54 E92
Hi guys Hope all is well
I have searched and searched and came up with some thing but I’m still at a loss I have a 07 335xi N54 (I love this car!!!) It has 276000 on her (mostly highway) Recently I developed some issues The typical waste gate rattle (till she warms up) I dont have JB4 so I can’t fix that unless I get new turbos Valve cover leak - so I replaced the valve cover gasket. No more leaking oil One of my canisters was leaking so I replaced that Replaced my charge pipe with aluminum one Replaced SOME vacuum lines Replaced all coils and spark plugs Replaced gasket going from head to oil filter housing And I’m still having issues the same issues I had before I did these things On a 2nd gear pull at 4000 rpms engine goes limp No check engine light just the half engine light Actually almost anytime over 4K I go limp If I’m sitting idle it’s “sputters” every so often Again no codes (with or without AC on) I understand my car might be a little tired lolol But if I could get alittle more life out of her I’d be happy. Car does run good otherwise, I looked up smoke test for vacuum on N54. Found some things even the one on N54tech That is referenced in quite a number of threads. I saw one with a hand pump and a grape swisher lolol but no links on to where to buy these items (the hand pump) Right now I’m hitting like 4-6# of boost sometimes 8 but then it goes limp. I feel it might be a vacuum leak between the random rough idle and the low boost. Last time I connected it to ICAN and the other program it showed me a low boost code, but my regular reader doesn’t show that. And again no MEL on. Any suggestions besides get a new car lol are appreciated :-) Thanks again John |

For engine running issues you need an OBD interface and a good OBD app. I’d suggest OBD Fusion as it shows codes, has accurate PIDs, does realtime data, logging, freeze frame data, etc.
What are all the trouble codes? Post them here. What are the warm idle long term fuel trims? If they’re over +10% you may have a vacuum leak. Here’s a simple smoke test video. What is the fuel pressure? Maybe your fuel pump is going bad? |

You CANNOT diagnose a problem like that without a GOOD, BMW-specific OBD scanner. The Foxwell NT-510 is excellent, and cheap ($150, including the BMW-specific software for it). I bought mine direct from the Foxwell on-line store and had it in a few days. It is the best OBD scanner I've ever owned, by FAR. You WILL find one or more fault codes stored in the ECU that will point you to the source of the problems.

I had a similar problem with my 07 335i with 122k miles. It ended up being the turbo boost pressure sensors. The shop replaced one first and it fixed a lot of the problem. Then a couple weeks later i had them replace the second one and the car is running much much better now. Just a matter of time before I need new turbos but definitely look into the boost pressure sensors/solenoids as your fix for now!

1. Bad turbos 2. Vacuum line 3. Faulty charge pipe install Process of elimination is key. Check charge pipe installation. After that t smoke test vacuum lines. Last thing to check is turbos. Get a good code reader. It will take you far. |

I've heard of it, not entirely sure of how it works or it's functionality. But if it scans codes, do that to give you a place to start. Then you could dig into the details that NCS expert is giving you to better pinpoint the issue. But if your getting a boost leak your gonna need to do some hands on homework making sure all the hardware is working correctly.
