can't buy tires from costco? wtf
So I'm planning to get some rims and get the tires from costco. I went to costco and they said that they needed consent from my dealer to buy tires from them. Do I have to go to the dealer and get some written paper? The dealer won't hassle me or anything right?

That's weird- never heard of that before. Why would they refuse to sell you tires?? Just buy from TireRack and get them mounted locally. I'm not sure what warranty you're talking about but tires don't generally go bad.

Costco is funny when it comes to tires. They wouldn't sell me anything but the standard sized tires for my Explorer for liability reasons.

+1. Not sure about the dealer consent thing but costco will only sell you tires for your factory wheel specs. Its because they dont want to be held liable for people that have aftermarket rims and buy the wrong sized tires.

Not true. I've purchased tires from Costco for my Benz and they didn't question me at all. Other friends did the same for their Jeep and other cars without issues. None of these were OE spec tires (why replace garbage with garbage).

the costco by my house likes to use the impact gun to reinstall the wheels to the car. no thanks.
OP: find another tire place or tirerack and have the tires drop shipped to a shop.

True. However, we can still buy from them and install at local shop. In that case, we don't save anything since we already paid for the road hazardous/rotate/balance program from Costco with the tires.

sorry wouldn't let costco go near the car. i've seen them drop rims off the car when using their impact gun, then have them superman the lugs back on to 200ft/lb. no thank you.
unless you know an enthusiast there i'd steer clear and find a shop in your city that charges more. i went to discount tire with the ole camaro and the guy asked if i had headers (loud!) i said yeah; he said can't use the lift and had to jack the diff to put the DR's on. used a torque wrench. come to find out he had a WS6 pontiac. tipped the guy he did everything right. except they the manager got pissed off when i wanted lower tire pressure so he had to comply and gave me a tire gauge and said to take it around back and let the pressure down. (36psi would have killed the 16" DR's in no time).

Better pray that your wheels don't get F-ed up. Places like costco are setup to churn out huge volumes of wheels... The installers have a quota, meaning that they have to get the car in and out within x number of minutes. On top of that, low profiles take more time to install. I can teach you how to mount and dismount a 15" wheel for a civic within 15 minutes, but a BMW wheel... well... many days and many broken wheels/tires later, you might get the hang of it. So, its a recipe for disaster...
