Wheel warranty

Have a X5 with the 22” wheel option on order.

What’s the story on bmw wheel warranty? Cost? Is it a sham?

I believe those wheel warranty add-on is offered by the each dealer. Often you can get them thrown in for free or for almost nothing. We added the paint protection and dent repair options to my wife’s 528i, they actually lowered our monthly lease payment by $2 for some reason. I didn’t complain.

For our X5 I’m going to get the wheel damage warranty. My wife likes to curb the wheels in the darn drive thru way too often! And with the X5 being VERY wide I know we are going to need the warranty!

Remember those warranties are negotiable! So work them down as much as you can.

Thanks! My wife loves the Starbucks drive through a little too much.

Can you buy it after the sale? Discounted from other dealers sometimes?

LOL. Starbucks is the culprit for my wife too. Every morning! Luckily she is getting better about avoiding the curbs. I get so nervous when she takes the ZL1 occasionally.

I don’t know if you can add after the fact. I’m sure there is some company that would offer it, but probably costs more than at the time of a vehicle purchase.

I just got quoted $2495 for tire and wheel protection. Would love to know what others are getting.

Oh dear! That’s too much. I actually just did a little research via Google on those warranties and there are so many people saying don’t bother. So unless the dealer is going to practically give the warranty to you, maybe we shouldn’t bother. Like I said in my wife’s case, they basically threw in two warranties and it reduced our payment...so I took them.

I'm curious too, regarding why someone would buy this. I drive an ML350 and the MB dealership will fix my rims for $80/rim - They fix them up like new. Can you not do that with the BMW rims? If you take $2,800 warranty, you would need to fix your curb rash rims 35 times before you break even. Unless, of course, your main concern isn't curb rash, but bending the rim.

I wouldn’t opt for it on a lease...upon lease return of my X5 a few months ago they hardly dinged me for curb rashed wheels

In the pot hole infested north east that warranty pays for it self. Take it from the guy that damage 2 F80 wheels and had them replaced along with 3 Pilot Super sports.

with Tires at 400-500 each on those 22's, and the wheels themselves - I can see how the warranty can pay for itself with about 1.5 claims.

But - at least for us, the highest risk is in curbing. Which, it sounds like is reasonably repairable.

Some BMW wheels can't be refinished.

Are there any 3rd party warranties available? The dealer is merely reselling a product and marking it up. I have seen mentions of this elsewhere in bimmerpost but haven’t found a source.

I just ordered a new x5 and with the cost of the 22” this is likely a good policy to buy.

Unless BMW has changed their wheel warranty, it does not cover cosmetic damage. So, while repairing curb rash (typically ~$100 in my experience) doesn't justify the warranty, it doesn't matter since it's not covered anyway.

And...at least in the BMW wheel warranty I had for my '14 X5, it also doesn't cover curbs. I forget the exact language, but the warranty clearly states it covers damage due to something not normally in the road. That would exclude curbs.
