688 / Harman Kardon Power Output

Just realised that the power output for G05 is only 464W compared to F15's 600W. That's 22.6% drop in power. Anyone with insights as to why? New circuitry maybe, or the new tech taken at the expense of HK system?

How many speakers come with the HK? It's an up sell to the B&W 20 speaker/1,500-watt output.

It's the same 16 speakers currently on F15. 7/7/2 setup.

From what I saw HK is cheaper as an option now (like many other options on G05)

Listened to some music on the H/K sound system on G05. Pleased to report that despite the drop in power, it actually sounded really good and decent (sufficient) power to me. I was playing 160kbit/s music tracks which I previously downloaded on Spotify.

My 18 540i HK system sounds much better than my wifes 19 x5 HK system.I have to turn it up 3 quarters of the way to get it as loud as the 540 at only a quarter of the volume.

If you're using a Bluetooth source, might make sure the phone has the volume for that output turned all the way up.

Oh yeah for sure. Dont get me wrong it still sounds great, its just the power behind it is not the same. Suspect they lowered the watts or changed the brand/type/company for the amp.

I'm hopeful the HK is enough, I have the high-end B&O in my current Audi, but I'm also getting older and my hearing isn't what it used to be, plus I mostly stream BT audio from iTunes (downloaded, high quality, but still).

With CarPlay wireless, it doesn't use BT for the audio, it uses WiFi to get an AirPlay quality audio stream - so that should be significantly better as a source.

You should give some time speakers in your new X5 - after warming through few weeks they will start to sound better.

I've heard it's still a 600W system but there an error on BMWs site. check HKs BMW page to see the 600W system reference.

Bingo.

And to the poster above that caught the bluetooth volume involvement - good call. That will also effect the overall sound. I've found bluetooth volume needs to be all the way up for the supporting source to use its own "normal" audio range.

Would you explain CarPlay wireless music audio?

With wireless CarPlay, Bluetooth is only used to negotiate the WiFi connect to the vehicle's access point, after which all music/video/etc. is carried entirely via high-bandwidth WiFi. With more bandwidth available (compared to Bluetooth), the audio quality is the same as if you were playing on an AirPlay device at home (basically). If you have lossless 44 Khz, 16-bit files on your device, that audio stream goes directly to the vehicle audio system without being recompressed.

32bit would be better but anything beats Bluetooth compression

The HK in my F15 sounded way better than the HK in my G05. They were both the same price and the G05 has quite a bit less bass.

I respectfully disagree. the g05 noticeably sounds much better than the f15. I still have another few days left with it and going back and forth between the two the g05 def wins. Also has much better bass than before. G05 is wife's car I have the f86 with the b and o. I can def compare all three offerings and was pleasantly surprised by the hk in the g05

Do you usually install the Bavaudio subwoofer yourself or will the dealership do that for a fee?

Personally, I've only become aware of Bavaudio recently here, but others can chime in.

From their videos online - if you have a basic knowledge of tools and a torx screw set - you can DIY for maybe an hours worth of your time, if you really take your time. Its a simple as swapping out the old sub with the new. No retro fitting or anything like that. Simply remove the seat (4 bolts) tilt it back, remove the sub and housing, replace sub, reinstall sub and housing. While you're in there, you may want to add some dynomat to help insulate the sub even more and maybe increase the performance of the sub some.
