I've arranged a 24hr test drive in an X3

I don't need to change my car but I'm looking around so have arranged a drive of the X3. I sort of hope I don't like it...

M Sport 3.0d I think. Certainly the 3.0 diesel. Not sure of spec level.

Interested to hear your views.

I’m not going to say “you will love it”etc as it depends what you are looking for a car. The M40i suits my needs for a car, but everybody has different requirements.

Enjoy the drive!

I did a 24hr test drive in a 30d M Sport. I liked it more than I thought I would! It’s based on the G30 CLAR and as a result it’s refined and drives well. The 3.0 litre diesel produces only slightly less torque than my 335d and the way that the power from the B57 engine is put down is impressive. It’s not quite as quick off the mark as mine but it does it better, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I’ll let you make your own mind up when you drive it. Make sure you take it out at night too.

BTW, I’ve ordered an M40d

I’m seriously considering a M40x X3
I was initially set on the M40i, but am now swaying towards the M40d.

I only do low mileage, but think 326 hp and 680Nm suit an SUV more than 354 hp and 500 Nm.
I now I’ll not get the smoother engine and the noise, but the diesel is hardy rough, especially in the refined X3 and although the 40i noise is good, I think I’d eventually get fed up with pissing the neighbors off!!

I asked the ‘on line chat’ that very question ........

I received a long winded .......... ‘I don’t know’!!

I’d be interested in seeing the difference in GFV between the i & d

I think the i has a higher rate, so the monthly’s should be less. It’d be nice to see a proper comparison though.

I had a 20 min test drive of an X3 3.0d a couple of weeks ago. It was certainly a step up in refinement over my current F25 X3. The car I drove was M-Sport spec with a pano roof, which was a very nice addition. Hope you enjoy.

Well...

- It's a massive step up from the F3x in terms of refinement, interior quality and electronic/entertainment systems.

- 3.0d engine is a peach. Plenty powerful enough in this sort of car. Very refined, loads of torque. Good fuel economy.

- For such a big car it handles amazingly well. Great grip, not too much roll.

- Ride, even on 20" rims, was more than acceptable.

- Interior ambience, design, comfort etc top class.

However, it's not the car for me for a number of probably personal reasons:

- I thought I could like a smaller SUV, esp one that drives well- but actually, it's just too top heavy. I couldn't help feeling that I was balanced high up.

- Despite its prowess, its exterior styling is just "challenging". My family took an immediate dislike to it!

So - close, but no cigar!

What I will say though is that if the new G30 delivers the same refinement and improvements in the interior as the x3, but in a 3 series package, then I think it'll be my next car.

The G02 is the most recent BMW I've driven and I was hugely impressed by how much start/stop has moved on. I'm pretty certain it now uses Nav and Caneras to asses how long and if two stop.

I had a few really good experiences of being stopped at lights and when the lights changed and the car in front moved the engine restarted. I had not moved my foot (tbh I cannot recall if there is Auto Hold or not, I think it does have this so that definitely rules that out) and there was not a high load condition on the air con etc, the car was definitely reacting the real world situation, cool stuff.

I’m close to firing on the X3 M40d

As mentioned further up this thread, I think the diesel will be just as quick as the petrol in the real world and generally easier to live with.

I’ve never bought a car that I haven’t driven, but have driven the 20d, 30d and M40i, so between them I’ve been close!

I specced up a M40d and 30d the same and the difference was less than £2k, so looks good value.

Still have a nagging feeling that I’ll be missing out on the petrol M40i
The 30d was so refined and quiet compared to my 335d, that I think the M40d will be good ....... and all that torque

As usual, this fence I’m sitting on isn’t so bad ........

Seriously if there is any choice I'd go 40i rather than 40d but it is of course your decision sir.

Both will be all weather weapons! bMW nailed this car!

As long as you felt the 40i drove well, then take it.
