VANOS solenoid extremely oily

Hey everyone I recently decided to clean my VANOS solenoids because of issues with fuel economy and drivability. When I pulled the exhaust solenoid out I found that it was absolutely coated with oil to the point where oil spilled out from inside the solenoid. Am I being paranoid and this is normal or is this a big problem?
My intake solenoid was pretty clean btw

in MY experience when I swapped for new ones, they didn't have enough excess to produce more than a droplet or two... but when I got my car initially it was in rough shape as well...

Vanos solenoids use oil pressure to function - I'd be more worried if they werent covered in oil...

Thanks for the replies, it just seemed weird that one was relatively clean and the other was absolutely filthy
