Is it worth deleting the EGR? Or am I asking for trouble?

Is the EGR that evil? Any long term negative impact?

Well, if you do, and if you get any engine problems, then expect BMW to tell you to fuck off and pay for repairs yourself.

Can you afford those sorts of bills ?

No sir it is not. I'm trying to settle the debate and have been reading about it for a while. Looks like the pros outweigh the cons but I'm no expert.

EGR is part of the emissions control. NOx is partly controlled by EGR. No one wants EGR, but cleaner air is highest on my pro and con list.

I'm with you Pete, but it would help if BMW fitted an EGR to the F3x that was fit for purpose and wasn't guaranteed to need changing more often than brake pads!

I'm on my second EGR in 30k miles. I drive long journeys at least an hour one way on the motorway at 70-75mph. The second time the pipe had cracked. :
I'm not in it for 1-2mpg extra but more as preventative maintenance. My doubts say that BMW wouldn't play ball if a warranty claim had to be made to do with the engine and they found it coded out and blanked off.

NOx is a huge issue in city’s at the moment and we run the risk of a disproportionate stance on cars if things don’t improve. Whilst I understand the intent on prevention from failure of badly designed parts I think we have a responsibility to ensure what we drive doesn’t increase that risk.

If I'd had 2 fail on my car I'd get it mapped out on the ecu.

Garage List
I had the EGR deleted on my previous car an alfa 159 2.4 jtdm , and the car ran like a dream without it , more mpg and no more impromptu egr / cat cleaning sessions .!!
the alfa had an auto de clog and cleanout programme .
boy, when it had one of these sessions the crap it would eject from the exhaust was unbelievable ( it scared the crap out of my missus !!)
but it may be included in the new or impending MOT checks !! beware .

Nearly every car has a Dpf regen programmed in. The beauty about the 159 was you knew it was happening by the boost gauge zeroing when not under any powerload. It meant it could be monitored and allowed to finish. Before I knew any better I had had an egr delete and dpf removal on my 159ti and it pulled like a train; however the exhaust stank so bad. Little did I know at the time what it was chucking out!!!
