330/430d remaps - anyone had a bad experience?
I'm shortly going to get a 430d remapped, most likely going to get a custom map rather than just chipped, not least as it's a good opportunity to get it on a rolling road before and after too.
But before taking the plunge... I just wondered if anyone on here had ever had a bad experience and regretted chipping/re-mapping their BMW? I'm not so much asking about people buying cheap cheat devices on ebay and being dissatisfied... But if anyone has 'done it properly' and still suffered premature engine damage. I'm aware that any extra power will translate into proportionately more stress for the internals, however it's achieved. But I'm talking more about the car going bang within a few years as a result of the re-map. Basically, how tough are these glorious straight six diesel units? I'll add that I have asked around quite a bit and nothing has made me have any real concerns. It's my expectation that the extra 50 odd hp is well within reasonable limits for the engine, I can believe it's very safe. But still, no harm in asking... |

Not regrets as such, but my journey with my 330d / X5 was as follows:
1. Tuning box (Bluespark) - good results, gains of about 30bhp. 2. Custom remap - better, gains of around 60bhp and spread more evenly across the rev range. 3. Tuning box (TDI 3ch) - somewhere in between. The remap delivered the best experience, but the newer 3 channel boxes are close. When I changed the car for the X5 I decided I didn't want a remap on a brand new car still under PCP. A remap is also dead money when you sell the car, so it depends what your circumstances are. If you're out of warranty / keeping long term then I'd advise a remap all day long. If you chop and change (2-3 years) then the newer boxes are a great option. If I had my time again I'd have got a newer box, saved myself £500 and been able to transfer it between cars!

My 330d was remapped about 10 weeks ago.. no regrets, car goes very well now and the engine even sounds a little better now particularly low down where the 30d sounds a bit shit.
It hasn't been on a rolling road but Simon from Emaps reckons around 325bhp and 660nm torque.. the performance of the car seems about right for around that power too. My old E90 320d was remapped from 163 to 210bhp by Simon and I kept that for just over 4 years after the remap. I regularly used all the extra power and the car never faultered, so absolutely no issues with reliability at all. In fact it was 11.5 years old with its original clutch, flywheel and turbo when I recently part exchanged it. As long as you do your research and pick the right person to do the remap you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I also change the oil every 6k miles, I think this is best in the long run if your cars remapped and it gets driven hard regularly. Cheers |

Thanks for all your replies. Mind pretty much made up now I think!
I'm going to go for a TDI-tuning box rather than a remap, for the reasons I will give in this thread: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...0#post23563020 |
