AutoExpress M2C review

New BMW M2 Competition 2018 review

Verdict:
This Competition version is the car the M2 should always have been. The engine transplant has helped give the newcomer true M car character, while the subtle chassis tweaks have added a welcome dose of control to the BMW’s already agile handling. Not only is the M2 Competition a fast and fun driver-focused coupe, it’s arguably the pick of the whole M car line-up.

Good review.

Hoping Steve Sutcliffe does a video review for AutoExpress.

Ahh yes, lets all remember the original M2 reviews saying it lacked true M car character.

From their previous M2 review. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/2-series/m2-coupe

but in reality it's more of a spiritual successor to the original BMW M3 than the current M3 saloon or M4 coupe.

hmmm

Lets see what else did they have to say about the previous M2.

The car is excellent in Comfort mode where you get the lighter settings for the steering and suspension

Splash out an extra £2,640 and you’ll get an excellent eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox

Very interesting take on the original M2! These guys really know what they are talking about and have an eye for detail!

The six-cylinder unit is essentially a detuned version of the unit first seen on the M4 and M3. Yet while it lacks the overall firepower of its bigger cousins, the glorious-sounding powerplant has a more progressive delivery.

Guess the OG M2 was just ahead of it's time with the engine...

Our experts have also calculated the M2 would hold onto 47 per cent of its value after three years/30,000 miles which would mean the M2 would be worth a little over £21,000.

Wow, it's almost like the great minds at Autoexpress can see the future!

8 speed, active suspension, detuned S55... OMFG, what a disastrous review!

Now, for the M2c it will be 9 speed, smart active suspension, new S58, 5 seat, lighter than OF M2, and clearly with better soundtrack

Does anyone else find it interesting that one of the most consistent lines from these reviews is something along "this is what the M2 should have been from the start"?

I just wonder how much of these initial reviews are based upon suggestions from BMW...because that exact comment has been repeated at various times on the forum, both before the M2C was released (the S55 should have been in there from the start!), etc., etc...

Strikes me as awfully convenient...

I don't think this is a suggestion from BMW.

Its the most common criticism of the M2 ( pretty much the only one ), and thats from customers and journalists alike - that it lacked an 'M' engine and certain 'M' characteristics.

The point is BMW has addressed a lot of these issues, and thus its pretty much the focus of the opening lines in most of the reviews.

Did AutoExpress also happen to mention if the M2C also comes with a new Flux Capacitor?

'Cause I want to go back in time 5 mins and unread their review..

I do think it sounds coached. None of the supposed deficiencies were mentioned in initial M2 reviews.

I also do not recall a lot of gnashing of the teeth about the lack of a S in front of the engine designation at the time. As with the 1M, the proof was in the pudding, not in some letter in the engine title. I would almost say 'real M engines do not sound like sewing machines' but that would be mean

Most of this came about when the 240/140 came out and was as quick albeit lacking the dynamic abilities of the OG M2 So that’s probably what sparked that avenue.

True, but the "my God the M2 was a POS, about time they replaced it with something decent" talk is starting all over again, just as it did when the M2C was announced.

I was told that the M2c was going to be the M2 as it always should have been during my Nov 2016 ED delivery. I was also told this by the techs at M-school. I think it is an internal marketing phrase.
