VT car inspection

Just signed the paperwork to vt my car. So my next job is to get it looking good ready go to back.

However, from past experience how stringent is the vehicle inspection? The paintwork is good but all 4 wheels have some kerbing on them, some worse than others. Am I going to get pulled on this and need a refurb?

The fair wear and tear document says 5mm if damage per wheel but that seems very strict to me for a used car.

The car is on 19s so the wheels are diamond cut.

It is what it is, they will definitely be noted on the inspection however bmw dont always charge. Everything is really reasonable though, its far less than you would pay to fix yourself.

I'm surprised there's any tolerance at all on the wheels to be honest.

I mean, just because it's a used car, why should the wheels be kerbed? It's not something that happens over time without any driver involvement!

So would you say it’s worth me leaving them, let them be noted and see if I get a bill, on the assumption that the cost would be on par with any other refurb shop?

Leave them as is, I got pulled up on kerbed wheels but they charge you far less that the refurb and then BMWFS waived the fee anyway

Yep as mentioned leave them.

The majority of charges (assuming if minor) are cheaper than the restoration work.

There was a BMW charge matrix but BMW seem to have pulled it.

Yeah I'd chance it, it's likely that even if they charge you it will be less than commercial rates.

Absolutely, i think they charge around £25 per wheel, try getting them refurbed for less than that!

They inspect in accordance with the industry guidelines but as other said, it's up to BMW if they want to charge you.

Wheel damage is 5cm per wheel (50mm not 5mm!) - so anything around they you'll be OK.

Proud to say when my 3+ year old 335d went back the BCA inspector found nothing and said the car was 'immaculate'

Similar when I chopped in my 435, it could have passed for a new car out on the forecourt!

The worst that can happen is you get charged a very reasonable cost for repair (I believe it's around £50 per wheel, which is way cheaper than getting it done yourself) …. In my case with three kerbed wheels (during my 60k stint!) … No charge whatsoever!

I even phoned after a couple of days, to confirm that no charges would be forthcoming.

As a guide, local BMW dealer charges £115+VAT per wheel for refurbing 442Ms.

That’s decision made then. Wheels stay as they are, if I get an invoice so be it.

Is this the same for paintwork?
On the front corner there’s a piece of peeling paintwork around 2” square from some idiot in a car park. I was intending to have this resprayed at a local body shop for what I’m guessing will be around £140.

Smart repair would do the job on that, and would be about £60-£80 at a guess. That's without doubt what BMW will be doing with it, so bear that in mind when they tell you the cost of them doing it.

My diamond cut wheels were costed at £56 each by the assessor, 3 of them. I signed his paper work to say I agreed with what he’d found but didn’t agree the costs, as a paint chip had come up very expensive on his system.
Bmw contacted me shortly after to let me know they had waivered all costs. I owed nothing more than the 56pence vt point shortfall.

Yes, I had a nasty stone chip that was touched up (Not the best) they picked it up but never charged me.
