2 different TPM systems??

Hi All,

I traded my 189 wheels for 230s. My car is an 07 and the 230s came from an 08. The TPM warning came on my car and would not reset and came back with a TPM malfunction. The car they were from did not have a TPM issue. I brought my car into Brian Jessel to get a bunch of other items fixed under warranty and asked if they could look into the TPM issue as well. I specifically asked them to hold off on any labor if there was going to be a charge.

I then get a call a couple days later and he said there are 2 different TPM systems. One that uses a rolling start and the other using acutal wireless receivers. My 189s were using the wireless receivers and the 230s uses the rolling start system...... now the dealership is charging me $160 for the labor of taking off one of the tires to inspect and that they have already eaten 2 hours of additional labor they spent diagnosing.

What do you think I should do as I told him specifically to call me before if there were going to be any out-of-pocket charges?!

Anyone else aware of 2 different TPM systems or is it just BS?

1. Shity for you that their trying to charge you for the labor even though you told them to call you first.
2. You should have asked for advice on here before taking it to the dealer because we would have been more help(I always ask here before going to the dealer, Dealers dont know shit half the time. . . Members here seem to know everything!)
3.Yes there are 2 different types of TPMS.
1 is a little wireless monitor that is in the valvestem that sends a signal to the TPMS(which is usually on the 07+)
1 is in the hub i believe. I monitors the speed of the rotation of the wheel i believe. . . (usually on 06/07)

Thanks for the reply! Strange....the 230s I just bought are from an 08 and don't have the wireless sensors....but my 07 did.

Can't you tell if they have the wireless sensors by looking from the outside or do they need to take off the wheel?

I'm confused since he looked at the 230s and confirmed that they have the TPM sensors since they have metal valve stems as opposed to plastic.

now im confused, i thought the 06/07 e90's used a FTM that montiors the rotational diameter of the wheel so no sensor was required for the wheel. and all e92s had the new TPMS that measures the actual tire pressure and requires a sensor to be installed in the wheel. if those wheels came off a e92, it should have a sensor in them. maybe the sensor is malfunctioning?

If the wheel uses good old skinny rubber valve stem, it does not have TPMS. Wheels with TPMS use metal valve stems that are thicker than bubber ones, and usually has a nut located at the base.

To make it even more confusing, as far as I am aware, NO Canadian spec E92s from '07 use TPMS, just FTM.

edit: Assuming Vancouver, BC and not WA

Don't know whether these apply to Canada as well, but...

Style 161 TPM or FTM

e90's with TPMS

TPM vs. FTM

Which tire monitoring system on '07 e90's?

New rims and the TPM system

What is the difference between FTM and TPM?

FTM vs TPM--what's the difference?

Canadian 07 Style 230 19" has TPMS installed in the wheels but the car still uses FTM. The sensors are just there to fill the big holes in the wheels. Not sure about the 08.

Yes you can see without taking the wheel off.
You will notice a difference in the valvestem.
Some1^ noted also
Also, the wheels you bought were off an 08 but were they used? Bought from someone else?
Because if so, they probably took the TPMS for their next wheel. Most people do or charge extra for it.

No confusion. . . I think i am agreeing with you.
06/some07 E90's use the roational.
This being 07/08 probably needs the TPMS valvestem. Which probably didnt come with his new wheels.
