First ever M2 Competition Euro Delivery done at Welt! (UPDATED)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Benjamin, the wonderful guide I had, told me this is the first Euro Delivery they've done there of the M2 Competition! I was really worried about ordering a silver colour, sight unseen, as I find silver is the most boring colour you can get on a car. But this colour is gorgeous! Hints of grey outside of the sunlight, which is beautiful. I've seen tons of pics posted lately, so I'll post just a few and confirm one thing that I was surprised to see. I ordered the car with Black 788M wheels (option code 29U), and thought at first they had given me the regular wheels that are bi-colour, as I expected them to be all black, like the 666M wheels. But they are not black. Their face is a tinted gunmetal grey as you'll see from my photos below. The face of the regular bi-colour wheels is regular bright silver. That's the only difference I can tell. The photos you've seen of them in the ordering guides are actually accurate! The pics are taken at the Welt, other than the third and second to last, which were outside the Welt, so you get an idea of the car and wheel colours in the sun, and the last one, parked in the garage. I'll be starting my trip tomorrow, so I'll get to post driving impressions after. For now, I just drove in heavy traffic back to the hotel, but can confirm the brakes are really powerful! Only thing I wish is that the exhaust was louder, with more burbles, like the M4 Competition Pack, but that's fixable. For those who are curious, my itinerary, which is a bit ambitious, is about 2000 KM driving in 7 days. Munich to Austria via Grossglockner pass (to go see Bayern Munich play Paris St Germaine - not bad ), then to west to Italy to drive the Stelvio pass, then north to see the Neuschwanstein castle, then up to Stuttgart for the Porsche Museum via the German alps, then up to the Ring for 2 days via the Black Forest road, and back down to Munich, cuz I gotta hit the Autobahn seriously by that point, after having done the Alps in 3 countries. ====================================== My initial impressions of the car: Never been much of a journalist, so please don’t expect a lot! I only drove the M2 a year ago, for half an hour, so it’s not fresh in my mind to do a comparison of it. I won't get into the aesthetics of the car. It's absolutely gorgeous, and I love the Silver colour. Have noticed quite a few people gawking at the car and giving thumbs up, so I'm not alone. I’ve spent about 6 hours driving it, much of it in traffic unfortunately, but did some twisty mountain roads, and it really handles well. No surprises. The upgraded brakes are freakin’ powerful! Just tapping them you get thrown forwards. I find it a bit stiff on rough city roads at slower speeds I have to say, but at speed on rough twisty roads even, it’s so balanced. I wish it had the adjustable suspension for those times, but that’s another story. It seems more comfortable eating up bumps almost the faster you go. Didn’t feel uneasy at all on the twisty mountain roads of the Alps. At 100 MPH, it feels like it’s going 60 MPH. It’s so stable and solid. Power is quite smooth delivery. Interestingly, even in Sport + mode. I was expecting more of a kick in the pants every time I pressed the gas, but not quite. I’ve been driving a 2016 Golf R lately, and yes, although it weighs a few hundred pounds less, it only has 300 HP and ft lbs of torque, but it really kicks you back when you press the gas. Perhaps once this car’s broken in too, it’ll feel like that. That’s one slight disappointment for me engine wise, but that’s just how BMW has chosen to tune it I’m guessing. ======================= EDIT: Before the above takes a life of its own, let me say that I've driven an M2 a year ago for half an hour, and the regular M4 and the Competition Pack one on a few test drives. All of them had power delivery the same, more or less, and from none of them I felt the same zip as the R in its Race setting, so it's not that the M cars don't have the power. 0-60 they're better in fact. It's just the way BMW has chosen to deliver the power, which is more linear. I remember with my Cobb tune on my 335 stage 2+ car, that I preferred the Sport throttle maps vs the Linear throttle ones, which many others liked. The lack of zippiness of the car is the only thing that has surprised me, to be honest. Those who know and review cars for a living will probably describe this as a normally aspirated engine curve, or one that is quite linear and predictable. Which is not a bad thing necessarily. It can't be that BMW couldn't make it drive like the R. I'm sure they could have just mapped the throttle curve steeper. It's got way more power, so that's not the problem. Perhaps with the R, being AWD, they can get away with it. The fact the car is sound proofed well is nothing to whine about. As you can hear from my vid, the exhaust does make plenty of noise. If you expect it to be that loud with your windows up, you'll need to get yourself an aftermarket one. I used to drive with my windows cracked open to hear my exhaust. ======================= I was too chicken to really push it hard on the twisty mountain roads in Austria (check out the Grossglockner pictures), and it was raining, but it actually didn’t feel like it was going to lose grip in the rear. I guess it’s a good thing that the power delivery seems pretty smooth and isn’t easy to step the back end out accidentally. The seats seem pretty comfortable even on 6 hour daily drives and with the adjustable side bolsters, they grip you well. I’ve only been a little bit stiff, and I’ve got a bit of a bad back too. I wish I could turn off ASD to hear the real sounds of the exhaust. With the windows up, you can barely hear the exhaust. So the soundproofing is pretty damn good. Not sure if I’ll do that mod I’ve seen others do by adding the door seals up front. In Sport+, as you will hear from my warm start up video, it sounds pretty good IMO and has nice burbles. Comfort mode, was blah.... But then again, I had an upgraded exhaust on my 335 and like them a bit sportier sounding. I’ve driven an M4 with the Competition Package though, and that exhaust is way louder along with its burbles. Wish this was that good. I’ve got the upgraded sound system, but it needs more bass! It sounds cleaner than my 10 year old 335 with a Logic 7 system, but the underseat subs on the middle setting punched more than these. And I’ve got it set at 5 out of 10 already. The auto throttle blip seems permanent to me. It does it even in Sport + and even in MDM mode, surprisingly. Not too intrusive though, I just have to program myself to stop blipping I guess. That's it for now... Going to bed. Will post more in next few days hopefully. ====================================== Collision avoidance feature Oh, I almost forgot! One cool feature is the safety system, early collision warning / whatever it's called. If you get too close, or come up too fast on a car, it'll show you a red car in the dash display. Once though, I was on the highway, and as I was speeding up to the car in front, some dipsh!t quickly swerved into my lane. I felt the car actually brake lightly a split second before I did, which was very cool! ====================================== I ran my VIN, and this is what it says. I took one next to a plain silver car, standing exactly between the two cars. The light on the ceiling is at mid point too. Notice how much shinier the regular silver is. You can see how much grey the car has, next to the white pole. I'd say it's got grey in it for sure. Not just between silver and white. I ordered the blue seats and was really worried that it would be too much in your face, but it's not actually. Quite subtle and nice. Hasn't bothered me at all. And a few iPhone shots of the angel eyes, which are impossible to get right... And then with the car on the Grossglockner pass, the highest Austrian pass in the Alps IIRC. That's snow behind the car! It was only 40 degrees F, 8 Celsius! The other pic is of the beautiful pass also. Wish I'd taken a dashcam video of the drive. ====================================== Some videos I made: Last edited by Lotus99; 07-22-2018 at 05:55 PM.. |

Congrats! Looks awesome! As for the exhaust, do you have experience driving an M2 previously? I know the S55 engine needs a little more of a warm up to get the crackles going properly but also, if it's the same as the previous N55 M2, press the traction button once (to enter MDM mode), you'll hear a lot more burbles.

Congratulations. Awesome car. I can't wait to hear your drive impressions. I've been living in Germany for the past three years, so let me know if you want to meet or if you have any questions. I hope to have mine M2C delivered in August.

Congrats dude! We've all taken a gamble on HS but the colour looks awesome, good to hear you think it looks great in person. Look forward to more of your feedback once you've spent some more time behind the wheel.

Congratulations. Thanks for the info on the wheels. Looks great. All the while I thought most pictures that I have seen came in was the bi-color ones but if this is the black one then this is the way to go for me!

Nice car!
What's the different between the bi-color wheels and the black version? Nothing?

Congratulations, it is a beauty (and & beast at the same time)! Also glad to see that the dark sunroof isn't too bad looking in combination with HS.
Do spawn more pictures and driving experiences! Really looking forward... |
