Pilot Sport Cup,

Anyone planning on getting a set of these- They look sweet.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=(Y)&minLoad=S

ilot Sport Cup Track & Competition DOT radials benefit from the same attention to detail that has earned Michelin repeated successes at major endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The Pilot Sport Cup was developed for competitors who participate in autocross and track events, as well as for serious drivers on the road. Used as Original Equipment (O.E.) on several prestigious vehicles, like the E92 BMW M3 and Porsche Turbo and GT2, Pilot Sport Cup tires meet all the requirements for road use as well.

The Pilot Sport Cup features a dual zone, side-by-side tread compound with the outboard compound optimized for dry traction and handling while the inboard compound is focused on wet traction. These tread compounds are molded into a 6/32” deep asymmetric tread design that features a massive outer shoulder rib to further enhance steering response and cornering stability while circumferential grooves and independent tread blocks on the tread design’s inboard portion enhance wet traction. While Pilot Sport Cup tires do not require being shaved for track use, their lap time performance will improve slightly if shaved to between 3/32” and 4/32” deep tread, however this will sacrifice significant tread life. The tire’s internal structure includes two full-width, steel belts reinforced with Michelin’s Banded At Zero (BAZ) technology to stiffen the tread area and help prevent contact area distortion during aggressive acceleration, cornering, braking and high speed use. The Pilot Sport Cup radial’s basic sidewall materials and architecture have evolved from Michelin’s Max Performance Summer tires.

The dimensions of traditional front and rear companion sizes were developed to avoid diameter differences that can adversely affect electronic driver’s aids and all-wheel-drive systems. Original Equipment Pilot Sport Cup + (Plus) tires for BMW and N-Spec tires for Porsche applications feature a slightly different tread design with a thin circumferential groove around the outboard shoulder.

PSC are great tires, but they don't last that long either. If you go to the track then its worth it. I also like toyo 888 tires.

the PSC'c will only last on a heavy car like the M3 if you have added neg camber in the front. better to run 265 in the front and rear too.

I think the next track tire I try will be the BFG R1 tire - BFG is owned by Michilin too! Its rated high in all the tests I have seen.

If you are intending to drive to the track and home again on the same tyres then PSC will be one of the best options but if you want another rim/tyre combination for trackdays then go for a proper race tyre. Though getting enough heat into them would be their biggest downfall.

footie - do you get the PSC with the 19 option over there? we get the PS2 with the 19 in the USA.

I normally drive to and from the track on my track tires.

When I got to test drive the DCT M3 all of the M3's in the showroom and waiting to go out to customers were fitted with 19" and Cup+. I am assuming that this is standard with 19" in the UK, maybe someone can confirm this. All I know is it's not what I am wanting, the stock PS2 that come with the 18" alloys are far more forgiving when the wee wifey wants to drive the car.

As an example I got to drive an AW manual M3 a month ago which was fitted with Cup+ and it was damp (not soaking), well the car had 900miles on it and even on part throttle to stop myself from shotting over the 5500rpm mark the tail was dancing all over the place. Grip was decidedly thin on the ground that day.

In normal driving I too am very comfortable with the Cup+ but what I am talking about was joining main roads from a side road and having to give a bit of throttle to join the traffic without compromising another driver. In this situation on a damp surface I found the grip wanting with the Cups.

Though until I get to try the PS2s I will not know how much better in this situation they will be.

I have found DOT track tires to have pretty decent mechanical grip in the wet - as long as its not deep enough that the lack of treads can not evacuate the water. they are also worse over rubber build up and oil when wet.

The sport cup is a great tire for really hardcore street performance (but keep in mind that hydroplaning resistance is limited), or for moderate track use. It will not be competitive against slicks, but for drivers who do lapping days, driving schools or other fun-oriented track events they offer excellent grip and handling, and surprisingly good wear for a track tire.

Yes, 19's come fitted with Cup+ tires in Europe.

Best regards, south

Really hardcore and people should understand this, it's not the kind of tyre you want your wife or someone inexperienced to be driving with. It might be OK in the LA where there's less chance of rain but in Europe or even Florida I would be a little concerned about driving with these on when the heavens opened.

It's a little bit surprising to find the in Europe they are standard on 19" and not an option for someone to tick with full knowledge of what they are getting.

agree the are great tires - but a stock e46 heavy M3 will destroy the fronts very quick (especiually in stock 225 size) with stock camber. I went to 265 all around and that was better.

How much worse is the treadwear on the Cups over the PS2s?

Wow, that will get expensive running those everyday.

My friend runs them on his 997 GT3 without having to replace them all the time, but he doesn't run it everyday. If it rains or he has to take the kids somewhere, he runs the M5.

I wish PSC came stock with the 18's here, that would make the perfect track setup...

My car in Germany came with PSC+. They are standard with 19in wheels here.

They are brilliant as long as it is not wet. 3 weeks ago I was driving from Dresden to Frankfurt in a storm. Up to 110 kmh it was just fine. Anything above that and the tail was dancing.... dancing in a scary way if you know what I mean. No grip whatsoever. Bit of a silent murderer.....

I think that for the peace of mind I will go with regular PS2 next time.

This was my opinion of them when I tested the M3, probably brilliant in the dry so for peace of mind I prefer the PS2.
