M5 Competition is Driving Me Crazy

I ordered regular M5 last month and it is arriving at Baltimore port today and expected to get the delivery earliest next week?
I added black gloss grill and carbon spoiler to it.

But then I saw this Competition build on the website.
with $7300 more it includes
- All the black parts that I wanted
- M seat belt
- M sport Exhaust (this alone seems worth it)
- Slightly more power
- 2019 vs 2018 (resell value)
- Apple car play included

So list above is way more than $7300.

Down side is
- Slightly rougher ride? (This will be my only family car with little ones)
- Longer wait (Don't know how long. Any ideas?)
- No discount and higher APR? (I got pretty good offer with 2018)

I know my dealer's gonna hate me and won't want to talk to me again ever but is it possible to cancel my order now?
Should I even do so?

Enjoy the car you are getting next week, the differences are not that great. Plus, there are no incentives for the 2019 M5.

Do what makes you happy .. no right or wrong answer here. Agree deals right now are better on 18's but that can change as well.

At this stage of the game, if you have to ask then you'd already know where your heart is at.

If you're buying a Camry or a Volvo then you should always go with your head.
Buying a car like this you'll need to answer to your own heart.

If money is not an issue, then you should go with '19 M5 Comp otherwise you'll always wonder what if...

Stick with what you've got. Comp not worth it at all in my opinion. Even at even money I prefer the regular M5. Nothing compelling to switch.

If you bought, you might seriously consider switching.

If you leased (and got a good deal), I'd enjoy the M you've got ordered for the next year and then do a lease assumption to get rid of it while you order a new competition (once they are reasonable on lease rates).

Why wait to enjoy one...? Just "trade" up later!

Everyone’s got different opinions, but I’m in the same boat and waiting for the comp. $7k for all that stuff is worth the wait since I’m not going to spend time customizing the exhaust and cosmetics.

I'm financing it. So yes, bought it.
I just don't know how much longer it'll take if I switch to M5C and what the incentives are. So hard to decide.

How much longer do you think the wait will be? Have you started shopping around?

Based on what they have done with the M5C lease residual, I wouldn't count on any incentives until near the end of the year.

I was the second to get an allocation in my area and am currently pencilled in for production in early October. I may not see the car until thanksgiving depending on delays in delivery. I have an individual paint.

YMMV, but you’re likely looking at a wait of multiple months.

I had an allocation for either and chose a regular non-comp in DG and Tartufo. 2019. I've had the previous three generations of M5, so I know what I want.

I have to admit, I had to swallow hard in going non-comp, since it's the flavor of the month, but that's not the direction I wanted to go. I want it to be a luxurious a ride as possible, and to fly a low under the radar as possible. Plus, I hate those cheap looking black plastic parts and that horrible rear bumper. No performance advantages per se.

I have a M3 with Comp in Yas Marina Blue when I want a sports car. This I got for blasting up the Colorado mountains in comfort for the weekends.

OP, if money is not an issue and you dont mind waiting months, then Id say get what you feel youd prefer. If you think youre gonna end up selling your ordered car within a year or so to get a comp M5 (as the F80/82 owners did) then youre better off waiting and foregoing your current order. You may lose a little now for doing that, but if you switch down the road, youll take a bath when the time comes to sell your M5.

My thoughts exactly. My '18 will be here in a couple weeks, and if the Competition had been available at the time of my ordering, I wouldn't have gone for it.

I can't agree more with both of you actually.
My original intention was to get a luxurious "Beast in a Suit" that can be a ride for my wife and 2 little ones.
I'll probably stick to regular M5 and just hope that M5C would be much stiffer on the suspension. lol

How critical do you guys think the resell value would be after a few years 2018 M5 vs 2019 M5C?

I had this thought come up as well but after looking into it, I can get everything the comp pack offers and more.

For the items you listed:

- All the black parts that I wanted - Its really just the front & side grills for me. Those can be bought for roughly $300 for OEM parts or you can have them painted/wrapped in gloss black for dirt cheap
- M seat belt - Not that big of a deal IMO
- M sport Exhaust (this alone seems worth it) - Not exactly - keep in mind this is NOT the performance exhaust which would roughly be a $7K+ option. This is just a sports exhaust which I believe is around $1300 or so. You can order & have this installed on the non-comp for less than $2000. If you want to spend $7K+ on a exhaust, I would look into the Akra or Eissenman.
- Slightly more power - Not a big deal IMO - 17 HP is something you won't feel in the real world as a daily driver unless you track consistently and hit the drag strip. On top of that, there will be tunes and all that good stuff out in no time if your looking to add power down the line
- 2019 vs 2018 (resell value) - That would be on the only downside out of these if you are buying/financing
- Apple car play included - Its only included for the first year on the 2019's and will be subscription based after. Currently its an option for the life of the car

So overall, you can actually get everything from the comp pack added to your car for significantly cheaper overall. As others have stated on this forum, its more BMW marketing with a competition logo on the back. As an added bonus, you won't have that ugly rear bumper which you may want to paint/wrap if you decide to go with the comp pack. Regardless of what you choose, you can't go wrong. I just personally didn't want to wait more than I already have.

The only variable to resale is 2018 vs 2019. One more year of depreciation. M5 vs M5C meaningless, as many people will want Comp as though that don't. You take it in the shorts either way.

If you are selecting black wheels for the non-comp version, that makes the comp version $1300 less since that is a no-charge option. So now it's $6k more. For what that's worth.

To me the performance bump is meaningless. The black parts can easily be added aftermarket. The sport exhaust is the exact same hardware as the normal exhaust, just tuned slightly different. And the active sound is altered a bit. So this is no performance exhaust like someone else mentioned. Besides, the cabin is so insulated, you never hear it anyways.

So maybe the biggest difference is the stiffness of the suspension and the lowered (7mm) ride height. They didn't alter the steering like they did in the 2014 comp pack.

At least this is my reasoning. I'll probably jump on a 2018 if I can get a good deal and just add the extra black parts.

This is great advice. Residuals for the 2019 M5 dropped dramatically. So if you're leasing, then you definitely want the 2018. However, if you are financing, then I think the advice above is sound and you should give serious consideration to switching. Btw, I have a 2015 comp pack and the ride is not harsh at all. But maybe I'm just used to it.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I thought about it over and over, over the weekend.
I'm financing it this time but not sure if I can switch to lease option at the time of delivery or not. And also not sure if I can keep the deal as it is. And lease is very bad option in Chicago address due to tax issue.

I think I'll stick to regular M5. The biggest reason I could justify buying this car to my wife is because of the smooth ride and quiet cabin and not to mention AWD in Chicago. And M5 is the only M that can be a family sedan for me.(I currently drive 2015 5 series)
I guess I should minimize the harshness of ride by not choosing CP and also give up M Sport exhaust for our babies in the back.(support me here ;P)
If I want to go serious with Exhaust, I'll go with other options such as Eisenmann or Akrapovic.

For the 2018 vs 2019,
I don't think I can wait another few months just for update of MY with exact same car. Hopefully, the deal I got for 2018 vs the deal I'll get for 2019 plus the wait would even it out for me. And winter hits this area early and lasts long. I want to enjoy the car as much as possible before November.

Once again, thanks everyone for the all valuable advice. I read every single replies.
