X5 vs X3 - why the reduced HP for the X540

Does anyone know the reason that the new X5 40i will has decently less HP than the new X3 40i? I assumed when the X3 40i came out with 355HP that the X5 would get this amount or more.

Am I missing something? I notice that the X3 is labelled X3 M40i - is it that the X5 M40i will not be out released initially?

The X3 M40i is a lesser "M" car, but still an M car. Therefore, it makes sense that it should have a HP rating that is higher than a non-M X5 that also uses a 3.0L turbo 6 engine configuration. The only "M" X5's should be the M50i due in 2020 and the upcoming full-on X5M.

The X3 M40i is an "M Performance" variant, not an "M car," but this is all BMW marketing.

For the NA-Market, there is no X5 M40i, it's just an X5 40i. 2020 will bring the M50i for the V8

The X5 is a xDrive40i model while the X3 is the M Performance X3 M40i version so you'll see different power outputs between the two.

If there where to be an X5 M40i then both would have same HP. But BMW normally does M Performance models of the top of the line variants only. That's why you see the 5-Series M50i and not an M40i of the 5-series for example.

Hope this clarifies it.

For the record, these are not M-cars or lesser M-cars. These are M-Performance models.

Much appreciated.

Although I do wish they would produce a larger 6 cylinder option, similar to the 43AMG.

The 43AMG on the GLE compares to the V8 of the M50i. The BMW twin turbo V8 is a much better engine.

HP in the newer vehicles!

I think the "published" horsepower ratings on the "new" 6 cyl engines are intentionally under-rated. Though not an X-variant, my 540xDrive really drives and "feels" like it has more ponies than the advertised 335HP.

According to my SA, the reason for the decreased HP in the X5 40i vs. the X3 (M)40i lies in the new Twin Power Turbo which is larger but runs more efficiently (and also with reduced capacity) compared to that of the X3.

Wonder what the X5 40i would put out at full capacity

What probably underlies all this is the increasing regulation (e.g. in Germany) regarding CO2 production, exhaust filtering (until now only for diesel engines) etc.
