It's an 8 speed auto that shifts really quickly. Not sure what you were expecting.

This thread should be interesting... I’m with you.

Listen, BMW had no choice but to go to a torque converter, and for all intents and purposes they did it right....but it’s just not as crisp.

this is my biggest concern about getting an F90. I really don't like the transmission in my dad's B7.... and I assume it's essentially the same exact one with some minor tweaks.

SMG was terrible but amazing. DCT was less terrible and more amazing. Auto is just boring.

Yea the transmission is one of the downsides to the F90. Really wish it had the same DCT as my m4. It'd make it more exciting to drive that's for sure.

But at the same time as a package the whole car is just incredible sans the exhaust... which sounds kinda lame.

IMO the ZF8 is the best transmission nowadays.

It's quick as hell , and so confortable while cruising in the city.

I hated the 9 gear transmission in the E63s.

The ZF 8HP is actually what makes the M5 finally so fantastic.

It's a dual purpose car and the torque converter offers tremendous advantages over a DCT in city commute. The 8HP is used by both Rolls Royce and Bentley.

For drag racing, the ZF 8HP certainly don't hurt either. Dodge Demon runs the 1/4 mile in under 10 seconds. The Jeep Trackhawk shows that at least a variant of it can handle over 700hp in an AWD application.

The shift speed is also sufficiently quick around the track that the Giulia Quadrifoglio managed a 7:32 around the Ring.

So the complain is that it's too smooth and seamless? Please name me a car that you would like BMW to use as a benchmark for transmission calibration.

Will be interesting to see how BMW handles the transmission in the next M3/M4. I assume DCT is done for good.

I mostly agree with you. My X5M still has the “rolls backwards “ auto. I like the M5 better. Only thing to change would be the launch rpm like the DCT in the Turbo S. 2800 is low. BMW could make that electronically adjustable with the M setting. 3400 would be killer.

Probably did it for weight savings and cost. It’s my only reason behind it. As long as the car delivers. So far it does.

Love this post; as I get ready to move from my F10 to the F90, the transmission is the least of my concerns....but then again, I am a peasant novice when it comes to the driving nuances

I do know that I loved my 8 speed auto on my regular 5s before the M5.

I love this tranny. I had the DCT in both my E92 and F80 M3s....and while they may have shifted a bit more hardcore than the auto, I don't miss them at all...especially in daily driving. The 8spd ZF is a better all around transmission, IMO.

Agree 100%
This new automatic is almost as fast as the DCT of F10
And a lot better in auto mode in traffic.
But doesn’t even come close to the fun and soul of the DCT.
I wish that for the next generation they’ll go back to DCT.

I drove manuals all my life.
Bought the wife an amg slk auto hated the auto trans, slow shifts etc.
Bought a new escalade 2016, auto, transmission is horrible, jerky shifts, unpredictable, down shifts jerky, clunky.
Haven driven the M5 for 1 1/5 hours, for me was smooth, engaging, and quick.
So imo, depends on what you drive currently or in the past but this tranny seems to me to be good.
Will I miss my clutch, not really traffic keeps getting worse and worse.
I spent 7 hours on the road yesterday, going to job sites, so I really get to know my cars well, lol.

Completely different for me. I switched from Dinan S1 F10 and transmission was the biggest complaint. I expected F90 auto to be even worse. Quite the contrary, I am very pleased. Together with smaller turbos it gives a sensation of much greater responsiveness.

I think F90 has larger turbos.
